The odds are ever in our favour because The Hunger Games series is getting an exciting new chapter with Sunrise on the Reaping.
Announced on 6 June 2024 by Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group., The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is the second prequel in the franchise, following The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Written by Suzanne Collins, this fifth instalment in the saga will hit shelves and screens sooner than you might think. Here's a sneak peek at what we know so far about the upcoming movie and book.
What's the story behind The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping?

According to Scholastic, the publisher of the Hunger Games series, the upcoming book and movie is about revising "the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.” The story will likely focus on Haymitch Abernathy, the winner of that year. In the movie adaptations, Woody Harrelson played Haymitch, who, like all winners, became a mentor to tributes from his district.
When can we expect the release of the book?
The book is scheduled for release on 18 March 2025.

Who will produce and direct the movie?

Franchise producer Nina Jacobson, along with her producing partner Brad Simpson, will be back to produce the movie under their Color Force banner. This will mark Color Force's sixth project with the franchise since they first brought it to Lionsgate in 2012. Francis Lawrence, who has directed four previous Hunger Games films starting with Catching Fire, is in negotiations to direct this movie as well.
Who will be in the cast of the movie?

The cast for the new movie remains a mystery. However, original stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Elizabeth Banks likely won't return since the story is set over twenty years before their characters' time.
