Everything You Need To Know About River Wonders Singapore's Latest Furry Celebrity: Yaffa The Red Panda
Clocking in at roughly the size of a large house cat, Yaffa isn't very intimidating for a zoo animal. But one look is all it takes to understand why the adorable red panda has been amassing so much attention (and his own legion of fans, which includes yours truly) since he made his official public debut on National Day!

Kawaii factor aside, it's no wonder he's so popular — the magnetic little critter has a huge personality and plenty of energy, plus he's also the first new red panda to join River Wonders (formerly River Safari) in twelve years.

Hailing from Taipei Zoo as part of an animal exchange programme, Yaffa is now the second red panda living at this zoo, which is also home to long-time resident Karma, at Pavillion Capital Giant Panda Forest. As red pandas are highly territorial and usually live alone, the two certainly won't be happy bunking in together.

Yaffa's own exhibit is located at the newly opened Yangtze River section, a specially designed habitat that incorporates natural and artificial logs, tree trunks, a pool, and elevated platforms to suit the red panda's tree-dwelling lifestyle. The climate-controlled space is also kept at 25°C all year round so Yaffa gets to stay cool and experience high-altitude forest conditions like he would in the wild.

Despite his fluffy, baby-ish face, Yaffa was born at Taipei Zoo in June 2015 as one of a pair of twins (his brother is named Yafia). That means he's actually eleven years old and counts as a senior red panda. Since red pandas have a lifespan of 8-10 years in the wild, and 12-15+ years in human care or zoos, Yaffa might even qualify for a Merdeka Generation package if he were human (and Singaporean)!
Fans of the bushy-tailed celebrity can find a barrage of red panda merch at the River Wonders gift store.

It's also a good idea to visit in the morning or early evening instead of at midday. Red pandas are most active around dawn and dusk, and Yaffa will likely be out of commission (i.e. napping on a branch) if you turn up in the afternoon.
Find out more about Yaffa here, or catch him on Mandai Wildlife Reserve's Instagram.
