Brown Butter has gone through a couple of transformations since they first opened in early 2020. Starting out with a specialty in avocado- and beetroot-infused dishes - with a pink and teal colour scheme to match - they later on added sakura flowers and a pink garden swing to their existing floral decor. In their most recent facelift as of September 2021, they’ve clearly outdone themselves with new love-themed decor and a revamped dessert menu

New love-themed decor at Brown Butter

I’d already visited Brown Butter as a paying customer earlier to check out their  sakura-themed transformation, but their new love theme by far exceeded any initial expectations I had. While retaining that romantic Peggy Porschen-esque vibe they’ve since come to be known for, their ambience has certainly been amped up manyfold.

Aside from the dangling sakura and roses adorning the windows and entryway of the cafe, what will first catch your eye is the main centrepiece - the pink London phone booth shrouded in a canopy of blooms. While this was previously next to a garden swing, it’s now flanked by a carousel pony and a suspended swing on each side, entwined with vines and fairy lights.

More hanging swings have been installed between the row of window-facing seats that are great for people-watching. While the swings don’t actually move, you’re free to sit on them for photography purposes.

The grand highlight, however, are the velvety plush seats right at the back of the cafe that come with feathery cupid wings attached to them, making those seated look oh-so-angelic. Flower arches separate each two-seater table, making it feel as though it’s just you and your date in your own private alcove. Adding a magical touch are butterflies suspended on transparent string, giving the illusion of them flitting about on their own.

Don’t despair if you don’t manage to snag a winged chair, as the other seating areas are also photo-worthy! One of them has hot pink princess-style sofas against a wall of 3D sugar hearts, each one inscribed with uplifting words and phrases like “hope”, “dream”, and “love”.

There are also a few four-seater spaces in front of rose-filled walls, or under floral frames. Literally every corner of this cafe is pretty!

Look behind the telephone booth for yet another winged photo opportunity, this time with the feathers in hot pink, illuminated with neon lights.

New menu at Brown Butter

To match Brown Butter’s upgraded interior is a series of brand new desserts and drinks joining their existing menu. We started off with the Rose Jelly Shake and Yam Jelly Shake, both priced at $16.90 each and topped with a chunk of rose-shaped cheesecake. The former had a bandung-like flavour, while the latter had a pleasant and natural taro taste, with the jelly adding texture.

As the cheesecake is quite thick, it’s impossible to stir into your drink, so we’d recommend removing it before it sinks and eating it separately. Unfortunately, the cheesecake was rather bland, so we skipped the calories and focused on the drinks themselves, which were decent on their own.

Speaking of cheesecake, there are also the heart-shaped Lychee Rose Cheesecake and Yam Cheesecake ($14.90 each) - one could consider them solid versions of the aforementioned drinks. These were made to look like “cartoon” cheese, and were decorated with cupid wings. We especially enjoyed the yam one which was light yet adequately distinct in flavour.

Bonus: Every purchase of these cheesecakes entitles you to a free love lock, which you can pen your initials or a message on before hanging it on any tree within the cafe! The key is yours to keep.

Brown Butter Cafe Love MisuPhoto from Brown Butter

Our favourite of the lot was the Love Misu $18.90 - a matcha tiramisu cake topped with either a chocolate piece shaped like the Eiffel Tower, or a rose-shaped cheesecake, the same one that comes with the Jelly Shake. Admittedly, I don’t usually make a beeline for matcha items as they can be too bitter for my liking, but this was not too overpowering, with the sweetness of the moist cake balancing everything out.

Brown Butter is also launching a new Fall 2021 Omakase Dessert Bento ($38), which consists of 9 sweet treats. In true omakase style, these will vary daily depending on what ingredients are available. It’ll be on the menu from 24 September onwards till November, before their Winter 2021 box launches in December. Stay tuned!
