The Location

Part of Millennium Hotels and Resorts upscale lifestyle collection, the resort sits right along the northern coast of Penang Island. The area is quiet and peaceful, almost like its own little world, yet is a short drive from popular tourist spots like Gurney Drive Hawker Centre and George Town.

The Rooms

The resort houses 318 rooms and suites, all cleverly angled to have some of that coveted beach view. I stayed in the Social Cosy Room (from RM450, ~SGD136.50 per night including breakfast for two) that's good for couples, friend duos, or a family of three.

At 32 sqm, the room is spacious enough even for two overpackers to spread out their stuff without feeling cluttered. The soothing colour palette and semi-sea views from the balcony give it an open, airy feeling. And there's nothing like being greeted with welcome snacks - assorted kuehs, biscuits, and fruit - in a cute tingkat that can make one settle in right away.

The king bed (which comes in a twin bed option) was plush and comfortable, the kind that might just make you forget about your own, and the spacious bathroom was stocked with high quality toiletries. The little details that can make all the difference in hotel stay were well thought out. Power outlets were peppered at several corners, Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, and a large jug of water was refilled daily, with water dispensers on every floor. The room was also equipped with the usual essentials like a coffee and tea-making station, mini fridge, and a safe.

A unique highlight was the in-room Aiello voice assistant. It works like Siri or Alexa, allowing guests to control various settings  with a simple voice command. I had fun putting this AI assistant to work, using it to ask for room service, set morning alarms, and even pause the music when I was too lazy to roll over and do it manually. It's a 10/10, ideal for fellow lazy (read: energy-efficient) girlies.

My nitpicks? I wished there were more local cultural theming besides the smattering of Peranakan tiles, and the balcony could have used a patio chair or two.

If you'd like to pamper yourself with something more luxurious, book a Suite for more space, panoramic sea views, and direct beach access.

The Amenities

At the heart of the resort is the outdoor swimming pool. At certain angles, the pool seems to blend into the sea and sky, forming an ombre of blues. It's a lovely spot for photo ops, getting a tan or lounging with a good book.

There's also a 24-hour gym, meeting spaces for business trips, and a Grand Ballroom for special occasions.

The Restaurants

Penang has a reputation for good food and the resort's three dining establishments live up to the city's hype.

Beast & Butterflies is where guests will enjoy their breakfast buffet with a view of the the pool and beach. The spread includes a mix of Western classics like charcuterie, hydroponic salad, DIY yoghurt bowls and an egg live station as well as local fare like nasi lemak and freshly made roti prata.

By night, it transforms into an indulgent buffet dinner (RM168, ~SGD51) with seafood on ice, a large variety of flavour-packed dishes like Seabass Fish Fillet Masak, Chicken Briyani Curry, Marinated Squid and Satay. There will also be various live stations serving up Hokkien Mee, Chicken Rice, Roti John, and Dim Sum. For desserts, there's a stunning line-up of fragrant kuehs, jelly, cakes, DIY ice kachang and more.

Over at Breezy Bites, the poolside bar, diners can enjoy light bites and tipples along with live music and interactive games. And finally, The Social Hub has a more relaxed setting for a spot of afternoon tea or some signature cocktails.
