Crazy cat lady who loves afternoon tea, kawaii Japanese fashion, and all things Sanrio.

Even with clever smartphone filters and photo editing apps, we all still love a good ol’ photo booth - be it B&W vintage ones, the trending Korean type, or nostalgia-inducing neoprints. They’re more affordable than self photo studios, have hands-free countdown timers instead of requiring manually-operated remote shutters, and you can easily pop in and out of them on a whim without having to make a prior appointment.

Just when we thought we’d tried ‘em all, we came across this new photo booth in the West of Singapore with affordable prints at just $2 per strip, with free soft-copies included.

Operated by The Photo Booth Co Asia, this photo print machine was spotted at one of the entrances of Jurong’s Westgate shopping mall, near Tim Ho Wan.

Looking at its exterior, we could already tell that it was one of those ang moh-style photo booths - the kind that you’d normally encounter at events or weddings, rather than the cutesy Japanese- or Korean-inspired sort with kawaii stickers. Though with a preference for the latter, we were attracted to their claim of having “many themes to choose from”, as well as the affordable prices that didn’t require any deliberating.

Turns out, this photo booth is more than just your regular snap-and-go kiosk, for there are 12 filters, and 12 special effects for you to choose from.

The filters are mostly colour effects, with Black & White, Sepia, Neon, and Spy Cam as some of the options. We went straight for Airbrush to give our skin a smooth, glowy effect.

As for the effects, they’re very much reminiscent of those found in Mac Photo Booth - fun, but a little dated. These include distortions such as Pinch, Bulge, and Twisted.

If you’re the kind of person who favours looking glam over silly face-warping, you can just opt for No Effect like we did.

After getting your four shots in, personalise your photo strip with one of 10 frame styles. Pick from designs such as pink hearts, a cute milk and cookie cartoon illustration, a “friends forever” theme, and retro-esque pop art, among others.

For $6, you’ll be receiving a sheet of 3 photo strips, which works out to just $2 each. You can opt to top-up $2 for a photo booth video capturing your poses in motion, $6 for 3 additional photo strips, and $6 for 6 additional mini prints.

Make sure you key in your email address to receive a soft copy of your snapshots!

We didn’t opt for any extras, but realised that there’s a little hack that’ll allow you to obtain your video for free. See the code printed on the bottom of your photos? Head over to thephotoboothco.asia, key it into the box, and you’ll be able to access 1) A soft copy of your photo strips 2) Instagram-friendly versions of your pictures in various square layouts, and 3) Videos of your shoot process.

These will be hosted online for 4 months, and you are free to edit the privacy settings should you wish to do so.

There will be one video per image frame, so make sure you save all four and not just one!

Your photo prints will come with perforated lines separating each strip so you won’t have to look for a bookshop just to get a pair of scissors to divide them nicely among you and your friends.

Just a heads up: The booth is pretty small, so we wouldn’t recommend trying to cram too many people in it at one go. It was already rather squeezy for just myself and my partner, so I’d say 3 pax would be the maximum - which is just as well, since the prints come in sets of three.

While this photo booth isn’t the most technologically advanced, it serves its purpose and certainly gives you more than your two bucks’ worth. I wouldn’t be compelled to travel down to the far West just for it, but if you do happen to be hanging out in the Jurong area, then it’s worth a try!
