The Gucci X Adidas Collaboration Features Vintage Details, Bold Hues, And Logos Aplenty
For the past couple of weeks, Gucci teased its collaboration with adidas via a series of Instagram posts, where models exercised in what looked like retro sports club uniforms. Slated to launch on June 7 both online and in stores, the highly-anticipated drop is said to exude collegiate style with an unmistakably vintage vibe. Think retro-glam detailing, bold colours, and an endless array of logos.

No stranger to brand crossovers such as the famous Hacking Project with Demna’s Balenciaga for fall 2021 or pop cultural icons like Doraemon, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele is inspired by the idea of metamorphosis. First seen on the FW22 “Exquisite Gucci” runway, the collection is an ode to Alessandro’s fascination for the old-school athleisure brand. Being a steadfast collector of adidas Gazelle sneakers himself, the designer seemed to have found the perfect combination of retro glamour and sentimentality in this collection.

Resembling archival sports catalogues but with a preppy twist, the lookbook was shot against vibrantly coloured backdrops by photographer Carlijn Jacobs. Signature pieces like the adidas tracksuit are a staple here, deconstructed in a variety of versatile separates and emblazoned with re-coded emblems from both brands.

Playing on the logomania trend, interlocked logos feature heavily across the women’s and men’s collection. Gender-neutral pieces with a dress-up athletic vibe are the theme, with joggers, shorts, bell bottoms, and pencil skirts given the Gucci treatment via the brand’s green and red webbing, as well as the adidas three stripes. Meanwhile, the lotus-shaped adidas trefoil has been enlarged and showcased wallpaper-style on breezy anoraks and classy belted jackets.

On the footwear front, the adidas Gazelles have been Gucci-fied with the GG lettering and other styles like clogs and flatforms are marked with monograms from both labels. Other accessories include a luggage featuring the trefoil and Gucci logo spelled backwards. Overall, the extensive collection is fun, bold, and a homage to the effortless athleisure style of the yesteryear.
