There are some common hair-washing mistakes that you may be making that's causing your locks to go frizzy or limp and lifeless.

Keep reading to check them out!

#1 Not brushing your hair before shampooing

Hair is weaker when wet so detangling your hair while it's dry can help avoid breakage while you're washing it. Before you shower, comb your hair in small pieces to remove knots and tangles, starting at the ends and working up to the roots.

#2 Not rinsing your hair with enough water before shampooing

Shampoo spreads more evenly when your hair is well soaked in water so it can get a more thorough cleanse. You'll also need to use less shampoo that way which saves you money in the long run. Don't rush the pre-shampoo rinse and make sure your hair is thoroughly drenched.

#3 Massaging your scalp with fingernails (or not at all)

When you're shampooing your hair, most of the massaging should be at the roots to promote blood circulation and stimulate hair growth. This brings the nutrients in the shampoo to the hair follicle where it's needed to grow healthy and strong hair.

That said, make sure you're not using your fingernails to do the massaging as this could damage your scalp or cause breakage. Use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp, working the shampoo into a lather.

#4 Constantly switching between too many shampoos

You might have heard that your hair "gets used to" a shampoo after some time and stops working. Well, that's a myth! In fact, constantly changing shampoos can irritate your scalp. Try to stick to one shampoo for at least three months to see if it's suitable for you.

#5 Leaving shampoo residue in your hair

Even if the water runs clear, it doesn't mean all the product in your hair has been completely rinsed out. Shampoo residue can clog your scalp and weigh down your hair, making it look flat and exacerbating hair loss. Make sure to stand under the shower for a good 30 seconds or more depending on the length and thickness of your hair.

The shampoo itself could be the culprit that's leaving residue on your hair. Silicone is a common ingredient in shampoos that coats the hair. This gives hair a false sense of smoothness but silicone is difficult to wash out. The build up of silicone makes hair either dry and brittle or greasy as it overproduces oil to make up for the dehydration. Make sure to go for silicone-free shampoos to avoid this!
