Calling all lovers of Japanese fusion cuisine! Here's the piping hot (green) tea: Moss Cross Tokyo will be opening its doors here in Singapore on 17 January 2024, with an exclusive menu specially designed for this first-ever overseas outpost. The restaurant is conveniently located a short 5-minute walk from Chinatown MRT station, making it perfectly accessible for an upscale lunch or dinner.

For those who have had the pleasure of trying their famous Shokado-9 Omakase Box at other outlets in Japan, you'll want to waste no time heading down to try the new offerings. As for the uninitiated, dining at Moss Cross is quite the experience, full of unique yet familiar flavours and textures, as well as Instagram-worthy plates!

What's more, the restaurant is furnished with an aesthetically pleasing blend of modern and Japanese-inspired interiors, reflecting the style of their menu. Wooden-accented furniture and lush green plants also make the place feel both sleek and cosy. We decided to stop by and try their 7-course Wakon-Yosai menu for ourselves — read on to find out more about our experience!

The Shokado-9 Omakase Box is the star of the show at Moss Cross, and it certainly lived up to all the hype. Each of the box's nine compartments holds an omakase creation that varies by the day. This means customers can come back again and again and be surprised by different small bites every time!

Our favourites are the succulent Chutoro Wasabi Tartar, containing a generous cut of fish drizzled with a mildly spicy wasabi sauce, the delectable Roasted Wagyu Seaweed Sauce Avocado, which has a perfect blend of the savoury beef and umami-filled seaweed sauce, and the Red Bell Pepper Herb Rice Sushi featuring a deliciously seasoned slice of bell pepper atop herb rice in place of the usual fish sashimi.

Appetisers

Next up are two appetiser courses containing moreish seafood delicacies. The Hyogo Oyster adorned with Camembert, Caviar, and Konbu is a dream come true for oyster lovers (just look at the size of it!), and the creamy poached oyster comes with camembert mousse, milk foam, yuzu pearls, and caviar.

Those who enjoy French-Japanese fusion dishes will adore the Molten Crab Chawan-mushi, Lily Bulb, and Bisque Emulsion, which has a rich and velvety texture.

Here's what all the meat lovers have been waiting for! The Hokkaido Tokachi Herb-fed Beef Cutlet with Homemade Worchester Sauce is mini but mighty, packing a punch of flavour with every bite. It's also super tender, ideal for those who dislike eating tough or chewy steaks.

Following that, you can treat yourself to a round of Roasted Hirame with Almond Flakes, Sake-Beurre Blanc and Herb Oil, which doesn't feel too heavy despite the cream-base sauce. This dish also weaves in some creamy spinach, elevating the flavour of the mild fish even further.

And of course, there's no wrapping up a Japanese-style feast without a serving of good ol' rice and miso soup. The Kyoto Wagyu Sushi adorned with Sea Urchin and Truffle Soy Sauce is accompanied by the unexpected taste of Middle Eastern spices, giving the dish an aromatic flavour. It pairs well with the Tsugani (Crab) Miso Soup, which has a hearty, sweet-savoury taste.

Desserts

To finish off your feast, dig into the Daikon Compote Tiramisu with Mikan, a unique vegetarian tiramisu dessert that showcases a mix of flavours. From creamy mascarpone cheese to naturally sweet daikon, and smoky cacao powder to tangy Mikan Mandarin oranges, we were able to savour the blend of flavours all in one bite.

The 7-course Wakon-Yosai menu costs $150 nett per person. You can also opt for a 7-flight alcohol pairing (for an additional $90), which includes glasses that are thoughtfully selected to complement the flavours of its respective course.
