Afternoon tea might not be synonymous with Chinese New Year celebrations, but the pastry chefs at Portman's Bar at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay have brought the comforting flavours of reunion dinners to the tai tai high tea experience. Served in the hotel's iconic picnic basket, the Oriental-themed Afternoon Tea comes with beautiful little sweet and savoury bites that taste just as good as they look.

The afternoon tea started on a high note with home-made Vanilla Scones served with clotted cream and a new pandan kaya.

After that, the piping hot Abalone Radish Cake arrived in a cute bamboo steamer. This dim sum dish ticked all the boxes from a perfect texture to an umami taste with a touch of spiciness.

Next was the open-faced Sandwich topped with a refreshing combination of tomato, tofu and seasoned wakame, a succulent Smoked Duck Tortilla with asparagus and spicy mandarin dressing , and a flavour-packed Tartlet with crab salad, pomelo and mango on a buttery crust.

Rounding up the savouries were the Bak Kwa on a pastry with pineapple mayo and chicken floss, the pink Choux Puff with smoked salmon and egg mayo, and the highlight of the afternoon tea, the Black Gold puff filled with chicken char siew and yam, then finished with gold flakes.

Moving on to the CNY-themed desserts, which were almost too adorable to eat, we had two delightfully tangy mousse cakes, Orange and Fire Cracker, and the fragrant Urban Farm Pandan egg tart topped with osmanthus jelly.

Finally, the Sweet Wagon rolled up and it had a complete festive makeover. Some treats to expect include classic Chinese New Year goodies, dragon-shaped macaroons, and intricate koi fish that are actually chocolate pralines.
