Has severe RBF but is fairly jolly and carefree on the inside. Degree of life satisfaction is heavily influenced by food.

Those hot air balloon photos on Instagram look absolutely magical, don't they? If you've ever wanted to go on a hot air balloon ride but find Turkey or Egypt too daunting to travel all the way to, you can experience it in the more nearby South Korea, in the city of Buyeo.

Located just an hour away from Seoul and Daejeon, Buyeo is a charming rural city that was once the capital of the ancient Baekje kingdom. Remnants of its rich history - temples, shrines and fortresses - are some of the star attractions in the city. But for history buffs and thrill-seekers alike, what's particularly interesting about Buyeo is that it's the only place in South Korea that offers free-flying hot air balloon rides.

The service is operated by Buyeo Sky Banner and will set you back 180,000 won (~SGD 180) per person. That's fairly reasonable compared to the prices in the Middle East, North Africa and Australia. They also offer pick-up service from your hotel for 10,000 won per person.

The balloons take off at around 6am, which means you'll have to be up early! Any fatigue will be quickly taken over by the anticipation as you watch the giant balloon being inflated.

Buyeo Sky Banner has also added a cute touch to the experience - a keepsake that looks just like a plane boarding pass complete with flight details.

Once everyone is on board, the magic begins. The hot air balloon lifts off the ground and exhilaration takes over. As the hot air balloon ascends higher and higher, you'll be treated to the most awe-inspiring views of the rural landscape including the Geumgang River and historical heritages from the Baekje period.

The hot air balloon travels across a distance of about seven to eight kilometres. The ride lasts for about an hour, and every minute spent will be pure bliss!

After landing, you'll be greeted with cheers and a celebratory toast with champagne. And to commemorate this experience, each participant will receive a certificate for successfully flying on the hot air balloon.
