Hair chameleons who switch up their dye jobs every few months are probably already thinking of what’s next for them. If you’ve run out of ideas and don’t just want to settle for a touch-up of your roots, we’ve got you covered. These new hair dye trends in 2022 are what we predict will be big in Singapore and Asia in general this year and beyond. Many of them are safe choices for first-timers as well!
Read on to check out the new hair dye trends for 2022!
#1: Earloop highlights on shoulder-length hair

Also known as “tuck-in color”, earloop highlights are specially designed to frame both sides of the face when your hair is tucked behind your ears, offering a cheeky peek of colour only from certain angles. While hidden highlights aka underlights go all the way round the back of the head, earloop highlights often remain only at the sides. This allows for easy concealment even if you’re moving around a lot, or when your hair is tied in a low ponytail.

Recently, this hair dye trend has been especially popular among those with long bobs or shoulder-length hair, as the shorter cut allows the streaks of colour to stand out more cleanly.
#2: Periwinkle purple, aka Very Peri

It’s no surprise that the Pantone Color of the Year 2022 is making the list, with this year’s being Very Peri, an uplifting periwinkle shade. According to Pantone, it’s meant to evoke curiosity and optimism - and we’re totally getting such vibes from this pretty purple. While it’s vibrant and eye-catching, it’s not at all gaudy, and instead oozes playful feminine elegance that will likely take a couple of years off your age.

Whether you’re one for edgy getups involving boots and pleather, or more of a girl next door who loves cute floral sundresses, Very Peri suits just about any outfit or occasion - that’s the beauty and versatility of purple!
#3: No-bleach browns

Who else found themselves missing their hair stylist more than they missed their partner during the Circuit Breaker? Whoops. With past pandemic restrictions rendering us unable to visit hair salons, many of us came to the realisation of just how high maintenance our dye jobs can be. In light of that, easier hairstyles that require less maintenance are now more highly sought after.

This includes no-bleach browns, which look flattering on just about any Asian skin tone, whether you’re fair or tanned. Simple doesn’t necessarily equate to boring, mind you; Within the brown category alone is a whole spectrum of sub-shades including caramel, maple, chocolate, mocha, and reddish-toned cherry brown - not forgetting the all-time favouirite, milk tea. Your hairstylist would be able to recommend something that complements your features best!

Without the need for bleaching, constant touch-ups won’t be damaging towards your hair and scalp. Even if you choose not to get your roots settled every couple of months, the regrowth won’t look nasty as it’ll blend right in.

#4: Split dye colour blocking

Although Jennie now sports a full head of black, we have the K-Pop star to thank for the ever-popular split dye trend, which first gained eyeballs in BLACKPINK’s How You Like That music video. What the singer-rapper had was a long bleached middle-parted fringe set against black locks, but things are now about to take a bolder turn.

Instead of just dyeing your fringe and leaving the rest of your hair dark, try experimenting with other contrasting shades and brighter tones. Those who love all eyes on them can also consider making the front section thicker such that it covers a third to half of your hair for that stronger colour blocking effect.

Complementary colours like pink and purple work just as well!
#5: Dimensional balayage highlights

From the chunky streaks of the 90’s (a la Jennifer Aniston in Friends) to ombre, to barely-there babylights, highlights sure have undergone quite a few “evolutions” over the years. The latest craze? Dimensional balayage highlights. Usually done freehand, these natural-looking highlights, as their name suggests, gives hair the appearance of extra body with a 3D-like effect.

While highlights usually stand out best on curls and waves, dimensional balayage highlights are designed to look great even on straight hair. They go well with all sorts of colours too, be it natural tones or quirky hues.

#6: Pastel ash shades like dusty rose pink

“Mermaid hair” with rich jewel tones like hot pink, turquoise, and violet used to be all the rage, but fashionistas are now shedding those loud colours in favour of soft subtlety, and that’s where pastel ash comes in. Slightly more muted than regular cotton candy-esque pastel hues, these have a more “down to earth” appearance that makes them more acceptable in work settings, should your boss be hip enough to allow it.

One of the most popular shades is currently dusty rose pink. Purples and blues are also hot right now.

Be warned - on top of the mandatory bleaching, pastel ash hair requires a fair bit of maintenance, as you’ll have to constantly touch up the colour as it fades and get toning treatment to maintain that ashy quality. But if your hair is resistant against chemical damage and you’ve got the cash to spare, why not?
