Q: How do you make something instantly attractive?
A: Just add a bunch of neon lights
You’d probably agree with us when we say that anything illuminated instantly catches our eye - from cafe decor to the BTS pop-up and laser light shows at MBS. Not only does the colourful glow from such displays lift our spirits, they also serve as - you guessed it - great photo spots.
While the Christmas light-up has already been set up at Orchard Road, Downtown East has their own set of dazzling neon light installations. Recently set up on 16 November 2020, the 4 installations that are part of an exhibition called Lite On! will be here for quite some time till 21 March 2021. Here’s a first look at the set-up.

Lite On! is a joint effort by 4 homegrown artists. The exhibition is a sensorial one that can be viewed both at night and in the day.
Arguably the most mesmerising piece from Lite On! is Shades of Self by Space Objekt, a rainbow-hued neon light tunnel set up in a walkway bridge connecting 2 buildings of Downtown East.
You’ll easily spot it from the outside, along the E!Avenue carpark area. Can’t miss that multicoloured glow!
Its colours are fully saturated at night, but in the day, it has a pretty pastel look that’s attractive in its own understated way.
Another piece that’s set to be a hot favourite for photos is Somewhere Out There by Speak Cryptic. In a mysterious blue, this geometrical structure was created based on the imaginary landscapes conjured in the mind of the artist.
Its peaked design is meant to symbolise progress and the universal goals of humanity.
Next, navigate through the winding Bubble Play staircase by Shophouse & Co. You’ll be making your way through 4 zones here, one of which will allow you to pop bubble wrap.
Tip: Sit and lean against the coloured blocks for psychedelic photos.
There’s also Eat.Play.Shop.Stay by Band of Doodlers, featuring whimsical illustrations that represent fun times at Downtown East.
Lite On! is a free-entry event that will be held till 21 March 2021, so there is plenty of time for you to plan your trip down. Find out more here.
