There are some types of pimples that you should never try to pop like cystic acne, but if you have a whitehead that you simply can't resist popping, read on for the five steps to safely pop a pimple without damaging your skin!

#1 Wait until your pimple is ready

Don't pop a pimple that isn't fully formed yet as this could lead to infection or cysts! If the whitehead is protruding from your skin and looks like it's about to burst, then it's ready to be popped.

#2 Wash your hands and face

This seems like a no-brainer but it's also a step that might be easily forgotten. Wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial hand wash and clean under your nails. Then, use wash your face with your usual facial cleanser and wipe your pimple and the area around it with a cotton pad soaked with micellar water.

#3 Use cotton buds and a needle

Sterilise a needle with a lighter and rubbing alcohol. Pierce the top of the whitehead and use two cotton buds to gently press around the pimple, not directly on the pimple. If you don't like the idea of needles, you can wrap your fingers with tissue paper and gently squeeze around the pimple, pressing down and moving slightly inwards. This process should be quick and all the pus should clear quickly.

#4 Know when to stop

If the pus doesn't pop out easily, don't keep applying pressure! That means that the pimple isn't ready to be popped yet and it's time to stop to avoid damaging your skin.

#5 Aftercare

Disinfect the skin with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and apply an antimicrobial drying agent like witch hazel to the popped pimple and the surrounding area. This will sting a bit! Wrap an ice cube with a paper towel and hold it against the popped pimple to reduce inflammation and redness. Don't apply makeup to the area until it's fully healed!
