We know what you're thinking: mahjong-themed dessert stores aren't anything new. But this one is different — we swear! Fa Si Xi (發四囍) Traditional Desserts is not only decked out in mahjong and Chinese games-inspired decor, but positively thrumming with retro vibes that will take you take you on a journey back in time.

The cafe is located on the first floor of Hotel Boss, a short 5 minute walk from Lavender MRT Station. Inside, patrons are greeted with bright wall art and hanging lights shaped like mahjong tiles.

Extra points for the on-brand retro Chinese hits playing over the speakers, most of which are from the 1960-70s and will likely make your parents feel nostalgic.

Upstairs, there's a photo corner where you can pose against a bunch of giant mahjong tiles! If you happen to look on the floor, you'll also find that the tiles are covered with a mosaic of — you guessed it: mahjong tiles!

That's not all, because each and every table features an entire set of mahjong tiles or a luck-based game set, displayed under the clear tabletops. From roulette to dice, these make amazing backdrops for your food pictures (psst take a flatlay, they look amazing here).

Desserts

True to its name, Fa Si Xi Traditional Desserts offers a wide variety of tong shui options on its menu. Among them, the most popular is the first item on the hot desserts menu: Dasixi ($11.80). This pick comes with four mini bowls served in a 2-by-2 wooden tray, the traditional Chinese way!

Inside you'll find Peanut Paste, Black Sesame Paste, two Curry Fishballs, and Golden Sweet Potato Balls. Not only is the whole setup ideal for the 'gram, each of the four items perfectly complement the taste of the others.

There are also other hot desserts like the Pistachio Paste ($8.80), Red Bean Soup ($4.80), or Almond with Peach Gum ($6.80). Alternatively, beat the heat with a refreshingly cold bowl of Grass Jelly All In ($12.80), Mango with Pomelo Sago ($7.80), or Chendol Ice ($6.80).

The staff recommended the velvety smooth Durian Mousse ($11.80), which definitely lived up to our expectations. Not only is the mousse thick and rich, the ice below comes flavoured with durian too (and isn't just plain crushed ice like at many other places).

Not in the mood for Chinese desserts? Indulge in a selection of Snow Ice ($13.80) flavours, including Mango, Strawberry, Mocha, and Chocolate instead. We chose the strawberry flavoured snow ice, which looks utterly adorable and isn't overly sweet.

It's topped with plenty of fruit-infused pearls that burst in your mouth and look like real, wearable pearls! There are also waffles available which can be customised and eaten with fruits or scoops of ice cream.

Snacks & Finger Food

Feeling extra hungry? Check out the Finger Foods menu, which includes tasty snack items like Braised Chicken Feet ($6.80), Fried Mantou ($5.80), and Crispy Beancurd ($4.80).

Light and crunchy, the Fried Shrimp Cake ($5.80) has a good portion of shrimp inside. It's an awesome sharing portion for those who are planning to visit with friends and family.
