Well, thanks for making our eyes misty.

Combs' cover of the 1988 hit, went viral last year, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. To mark the track's success, they united onstage, nearly 35 years after Chapman's initial performance of the song at the awards ceremony.

She hasn't performed in public for many years. The New York Times reported that she's had only a handful of public appearances since 2009, like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2015 and singing Talkin’ ’Bout a Revolution on Late Night with Seth Meyers before the 2020 election.

Chapman, a four-time Grammy winner, including Best New Artist in 1989, made a rare statement last July about Combs' cover. She told Billboard, “I never thought I’d see Fast Car on the country charts, but I appreciate it. I’m happy for Luke’s success, and I’m thankful for new fans discovering and loving the song.”

In a video introduction, Combs shared that he used to listen to Chapman's self-titled album in his dad's truck while growing up. He mentioned, "That song, ‘Fast Car,’ was my favourite song before I even knew what a favourite song was." He went on to say, "Tracy’s obviously written one of the best songs for a few generations." He pointed out that the opening guitar riff is instantly recognisable from the very beginning, even before the lyrics kick in.

Chapman and Combs exchanged smiles throughout their performance. Combs, clearly a big fan, joyfully watched Chapman strumming her acoustic guitar and mouthed along with the lyrics when she sang. As they finished their performance, Combs graciously bowed to Chapman, and the entire audience, showered the singer with a heartfelt standing ovation.
