5 Things You Should Know Before Bleaching Your Hair Or Dyeing It A Bright Colour
Thinking of bleaching your hair, or dyeing it with a trendy colour? Before you book your session at the salon, there are a few things you need to consider because bleached hair is notoriously high-maintenance.
But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make the hair of your dreams a reality. We ask beauty influencer Cinddie (@cinddie), who is always sporting candy-coloured hair on her dreamy, pastel-toned Instagram feed, how she does it and her advice for anyone who is considering bright tones for their hair.

#1 You’ll be at the hair salon for the whole day
Bleached hair requires maintenance, so you need to consider how much time you’re willing to invest. “I usually spend a good 8 to 9 hours in the chair whenever I go for my touch up and colour refresh,” says Cinddie. And because your hair inevitably experiences damage during the bleaching process, you’d also need to set aside time for regular hair treatments at the salon and at home. She also blows dry her hair after every wash, as wet hair tends to be more prone to breakage.
#2 It can get pretty pricey
Bleaching is usually one of the most expensive things you can do at the hair salon. The costs can add up pretty quickly considering that you’d need regular treatments and touch-ups for maintenance, on top of special hair products made for coloured hair. “Coloured shampoo is a must, and if you’re going for white or silver hair, you’d need to wash your hair with a purple shampoo to remove yellow undertones,” Cinddie advises.

#3 Make sure you get a stylist who is experienced with bleaching
The bleaching process is quite tedious and requires experience on the stylist’s part to ensure that your scalp is protected from harsh chemicals. Despite having bleached hair for years now, Cinddie credits her stylist for ensuring that her hair remains healthy. “It is so important to find a good stylist who knows how to do a good job,” she emphasises. “My stylist makes sure that my scalp is protected from the bleach, which explains why I still have a full head of hair even after 6 years of bleaching!”
#4 Do some research on what colour the dye will fade into
Brightly-hued colours fade pretty quickly, which means you might end up with a dull or unflattering colour in between touch-ups. Cinddie reveals that the trick is to pick colours that will work for your look even when they’re faded - that way, the colour will still look intentional even if you’re due for a touch-up.

“Blue colours will fade into green, and red shades can never be completely removed, so that affects your choice for your next colour. Metallic shades tend to give your hair a dull grey undertone, especially when they wash out,” she says, adding that she personally prefers to go for bright hues that fade into soft pastel colours.
#5 Wet your hair before swimming in the pool or the sea
Brightly-hued and bleached hair gets wrecked by chlorine and saltwater very easily. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up your pool time. Here’s a tip from Cinddie: wet your hair first to saturate the colour, and you’ll find that it doesn’t get washed out as quickly!
