Sounds crazy, but watermelon does exist in bread form. After all, if glowing cocktails inspired by Beauty and the Beast and printed potato chips are a thing, then literally anything is possible when it comes to the world of food. The quirky creation of watermelon toast, or watermelon bread, first started trending in Taiwan a while back, and strangely never quite made its way to Singapore - but that's all set to change now that we've discovered where we can get our hands on it without having to ship it from overseas!

It all started with a Jimmy’s Bakery, a confectionery in Yilan County, Taiwan. The owner came up with loaves of watermelon bread - reminiscent of Japan's expensive square watermelons - in a bid to tempt children to eat during hot, restless summers where they tend to lose their appetites.

The loaves turned out to be a hit, and others picked up on the trend, with people attempting to create their own versions at home. Several food companies also created their own ready-made watermelon bread, including a brand called a1.

Despite them calling it Watermelon Toast (西瓜吐司), what you’re getting isn’t actually toast, but soft slices of bread that look just like actual watermelon slices. They’ve even added “pips”, and the baked sides of the bread also double up as the watermelon rinds - how clever!

The watermelon bread is individually wrapped, which makes it suitable as a quick on-the-go snack. Sandwiched in the middle is a sweet, creamy filling, which is said to have a light and natural watermelon flavour.

Other than the Watermelon Toast, a1 also has Honeydew Toast and Dragonfruit Toast. These, too, are meant to look like the real deal, though we think the bestselling watermelon version looks the most convincing!

While these typically have to be shipped from Taiwan, we found a Preferred Shopee seller that has ready stock. Each box costs $12, and contains 9 packets of the snack. You can also opt for a box of all 3 variations, with 3 pieces per flavour for variety.
