After months of seeing recommended posts of neko pan (cat bread in Japanese), only to be disappointed that it's in Japan, I recently tapped into one photo to find that it was from *gasp* a home-based bakery in SingaporeCai Mama Shop.

Newly opened in October 2021, Cai Mama Shop is a home-based bakery that specialises in preservative-free milk bread.

Milk bread is a Japanese-style bread that's popular for its rich milky flavour and soft, fluffy texture. It's also has a slightly QQ texture compared to traditional bread.

Cai Mama Shop's most noteworthy item is, of course, the Neko Pan ($10.90), the trendy cat-shaped milk bread. But what sets their bread apart from that of Neko Neko Shokupan is that each slice has a face!

Every cat face is painstakingly hand drawn with chocolate "ink" by the baker, Cai Mama, who picked up drawing skills while helping with her kids' art homework.

Each loaf comes with six pieces of thicc bread made with flour, milk, egg, butter, sugar, salt and yeast. The designs are made using natural colouring from dehydrated fruits, edible flowers and vegetables.

These adorable pink and orange "cats" below get their colour from pumpkin and beetroot!

There's also a traditional version without painted faces, Kaonashi ($9.90). We love its minimalist aesthetic and the wholesome feels it has when served on a wooden plate.

A new member of the bread animal family is Kuma Chan ($10.90), which is the same milk bread but with a bear face instead. You can choose from two flavours: chocolate or coffee.
