Hai Xian Lao’s Mysterious Blue Lagoon Soup doesn’t merely come with a slight blue tinge. It is clearly and unmistakably blue, and it’s safe to say that any photos of it posted on your socials are sure to pique all your foodie friends’ interest.
So, what exactly in this curious blue concoction? Turns out it’s a chicken-based broth infused with butterfly pea flower, which is what gives it its vibrant blue shade.

This isn’t purely for aesthetics, for the butterfly pea flower comes with plenty of health benefits including antioxidant properties, stress relief, and the ability to improve your skin - among many others.
You might be bracing yourself for sky high prices, but you’ll be happy to know that this special blue soup is priced the same as the other soups on Hai Xian Lao’s menu. Their buffets cost $34.80 per person with your choice of 2 soup bases, and all the hotpot ingredients you can eat to your heart’s content.
Some of these include Angus Sliced Beef, Live Tiger Prawns, and Mala Pork Stripe. There are also made-to-order cooked items like Panko Fried Oyster and Spicy Sichuan Noodles.

There’s also an a la carte menu, but the buffet is probably more value-for-money as you can just “whack” without counting pennies as you eat.
To accompany the blue soup is a Magical Blue Tonic drink, also infused with blue pea, although, despite its name, this looks more purple than blue. But either way, it’s pretty all the same!
