Kumoya Cafe at Bugis has made a name for itself with all its character-themed pop-ups - from the latest Sanrio Gudetama x Bad Badtz-Maru one, to previous editions featuring Pusheen the cat and We Bare Bears. Each time, a snaking queue forms without fail, with many excited patrons waiting to get a taste of all the adorable character cafe fare.
But with the opening of Kumoya’s second outlet on 29 August 2020, perhaps you won’t have to jostle for space as much. Located at Orchard Central, this new branch is much larger at 2,000 square feet, with a private room for special occasions and a whopping year-long collaboration with San-X - starting with Rilakkuma. This theme will be up till 9 March 2021, after which another set of decor will take over.
Read on to find out more about the new Rilakkuma cafe at Kumoya’s Orchard outlet!
- Ambience at Kumoya Orchard’s Rilakkuma cafe -
For now, Kumoya Cafe at Orchard comes with a Rilakkuma theme. The entrance takes on the appearance of a house in Japan, with traditional curtains and plenty of light wood.
The interior is also decked out with lots of wood, but there’s plenty more colour in the form of table tops and seat dividers bearing the image of Rilakkuma and friends.
If you’re dining here on a special occasion - such as your birthday or anniversary - you can even book a private room which comes with Japanese tatami seating!
And now on to the food; Like the other Kumoya pop-ups, this one has a range of mains, desserts, drinks, and finger food - but with even more choices than usual. Each dish will be expertly styled to complete your whole character cafe experience.
- Mains at Kumoya’s Rilakkuma cafe -
There are 9 mains in total, with Japanese, Western, and fusion choices starting from $23.90. We’ve got our eye on the Rilakkuma Chill-Out Tendon Rice Set ($27.90), which comes with tempura vegetables, teriyaki rice, and miso soup.
Equally adorable is the Rest & Relax Rilakkuma Chicken Stew Rice ($25.90), with the bear sleeping lazily under a “blanket” of egg.
The Chirpy Kiiroitori Beef Stew Rice ($23.90) is another eye-catching pick, with the rice moulded to resemble Kaoru’s yellow pet bird.
Other dishes include Relaxy Rilakkuma Chicken Cordon Bleu ($29.90) and Morning Mega Rilakkuma Breakfast ($28.90), all of which should be satisfying enough for those with big appetites.
- Desserts at Kumoya’s Rilakkuma cafe -
All the desserts at the Rilakkuma cafe are so gorgeously plated, you’ll probably have a hard time choosing. Transporting us to Japan in springtime is the Pretty In Pink Sakura Parfait ($24.90), featuring sakura pudding, ice cream, dango, crumbled butter cookies, and a cloud of cotton candy.
Another photogenic item is the Rilakkuma Honey Forest Chocolate Cake ($22.90), an upgraded version of the regular log cake. This comes with honey cereal and chocolate crumble for added crunch, along with ice cream, chocolate, and strawberries.
Those who love green tea can go for the oozy Chill Chill Matcha Lava Cake ($20.90), served with matcha crumble, ice-cream, azuki beans, dango, and berries.
- Drinks at Kumoya’s Rilakkuma cafe -
Kumoya’s Rilakkuma cafe is the perfect spot to pop by for a drink on a lazy hot afternoon, as they have a whopping 12 drinks starting from $11.90. Each one comes with an exclusive free coaster, and there are 5 designs to collect!
The Frappes ($13.90) come in flavours like Strawberry Cheesecake, Caramel, and Matcha, each with a thick swirl of whipped cream, a sprinkling of pearl candy balls, and a stick of dango served at the side.
Alternatively, go big with the Korilakkuma Fizzy Strawberry Soda ($16.90) that’s topped with a huge puff of fluffy cotton candy. Eat it on its own, or stir it into your drink for extra sweetness!
Prefer a warm drink instead? Go for the Hot Chocolate, Hot Matcha Latte, and Hot Latte ($11.90 each). If you simply can’t bear to part with the cute cup, top up $13.90 and you’ll get to bring it home!
- Snacks and finger food at Kumoya’s Rilakkuma cafe -
If you’re not that hungry and don’t need a full meal - or would like some add-ons to share - the Rilakkuma cafe has a bunch of small snacks too.
Don’t be fooled by the Rilakkuma “Dango” Baos With Sweet Matcha ($12.90) - they’re not sweets but rather, mini buns on a stick.
There are plenty of savoury options too, including but not limited to Teriyaki Chicken Sticks ($13.90), Karaage Chicken With Shoyu Glaze ($14.90), and Hand Cut Truffle Fries ($13.90).
You could also get an exclusive Rilakkuma Snack Bucket for $29.90, filled with a snack of your choice. Pick from Takoyaki, Popcorn Chicken, Nacho Cheese Fries, and more.
