While waiting for the upcoming Studio Ghibli theme park to open in 2022, fans of the Japanese animation studio have something else to tide them over with. Well, in a matter of months, that is.
Much to the delight of fans, Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has come out of retirement yet again to work on another project - this time with none other than his son, Goro Miyazaki. The new movie will be an adaptation of the book “Earwig and the Witch”, and will be Hayao’s first-ever 3D CG feature.
Read on to find out more about Studio Ghibli’s “Earwig and the Witch”!

“Earwig and the Witch” is originally an English children’s book by author Diana Wynne Jones. The magical story follows a young orphan girl named Earwig who gets adopted by a witch- and made to become her servant.
The late British author also happens to be the one behind fantasy novel “Howl's Moving Castle”, on which Miyazaki’s highly-raved eponymous film was based.

There is a Japanese translation of “Earwig and the Witch”, which Hayao has loved and read cover-to-cover 5 times.
Being a 3D CG film, we can expect this animated version to have stellar graphics that might just put previous Ghibli works to shame.

An official release date for this movie has not been set, but it’s said to be premiering in Winter. In Japan, this would be anytime from the end of 2020 to early 2021 in March. Hopefully it will be released on Netflix in Singapore, just like all the other whimsical Ghibli films.
