The movie will be directed by Leo Matsuda, with the script written by Dana Fox, who also worked on Wicked. Leo Matsuda previously contributed to hit films like Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph.
Beau Flynn from FlynnPictureCo. is producing the film and has reportedly spent close to a decade working with Sanrio’s founder, Shintaro Tsuji, to secure the rights to the iconic character.
Hello Kitty first made her debut in 1974 on a small vinyl coin purse in Japan. Created by designer Yuko Shimizu, the adorable character quickly became a household name.
The English-language Hello Kitty movie was first announced in 2019 and marked the first time Sanrio licensed the character for a Hollywood film. It’s still unclear whether Hello Kitty will actually speak in the movie, since she’s been silent in all her animated series so far.
Just a few months ago in July, Hello Kitty’s friends, My Melody and Kuromi, got their own stop-motion Netflix series, released just in time to celebrate My Melody’s 50th birthday and Kuromi’s 20th!

Sanrio also gave film rights to other cute characters like Gudetama, My Melody, and Little Twin Stars. Here's to hoping they’ll join Hello Kitty in this upcoming adventure.
