This film marks a reunion between Yorgos and Emma after their work together on the Oscar-winning Poor Things. Bugonia is an English-language remake of South Korean director Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet!.

Emma plays Michelle, a high-powered CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracists, Teddy and Don, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, who are convinced she is an alien planning to destroy Earth.

The screenplay comes from Will Tracy, and the cast also in cludes Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. The producers are Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Lanthimos, Stone, Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen, Miky Lee, and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko.
The trailer opens with Michelle walking into a building, intercut with shots of magazine covers featuring her. “I believe every company should strive to form a diverse table,” she says in a voice-over as Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” plays. “To empower people of different skills …”
Her confident exterior quickly fades as it becomes clear she is reading from a script for a corporate video.

The scene then shifts to Teddy and Don, plotting her kidnapping. “They want you to think it’s you, that it’s you who made this world,” Teddy says while working on an assembly line. “But it’s always been them.”
“All we’ve lost … All that’s been done to us … We’re setting that right again,” he continues as they abduct Michelle outside her home.
Michelle wakes up with a shaved head. Teddy tells her she is at the “headquarters of the human resistance.” When she asks about her hair, he explains, “Your hair has been destroyed. To prevent you from contacting your ship.”

Michelle protests, “In the next 48 hours, the police and the FBI will begin a statewide manhunt. I’m a high-profile female corporate executive. I am crucial. In all humility, I can say that. Think of it like you abducted the governor, but worse. There is no possible scenario where you benefit from this incident.”
Teddy ignores her warning, insisting she is “killing our planet” and calls her “alien filth.”
The trailer ends with a tense dinner scene. Teddy says he knows who Michelle is. She replies, “I know you, too, Teddy,” prompting him to leap onto the table and attack her.
On 28 August, the cast and director of Bugonia made their appearance at the Venice Film Festival. Earlier in the day, Yorgos shared that the film reflects on today’s world. When it premiered at the Sala Grande, the audience gave it a standing ovation that lasted nearly seven minutes.
