PSYCHIC FEVER from EXILE TRIBE Rates Singapore Fashion & Food Trends, Talk Online Personas & More
Having interviewed their label mates BALLISTIK BOYZ just a couple of weeks prior, we thought we knew what to expect when sitting down for a private chat with PSYCHIC FEVER from EXILE TRIBE. We were so wrong, in all the best ways possible!
Like the former group, PsyFe (as their fans affectionately dub them) is a seven-piece boy group belonging to Japanese supergroup EXILE TRIBE, but that's where the similarities end. Effortlessly cool and armed with a suave sense of fashion, TSURUGI, RYOGA, REN, JIMMY, KOKORO, RYUSHIN and WEESA are less 'boyishly charming' and more 'straight-up disarming'.

Despite having their official debut just last year, the group was actually formed back in 2019 and has been making their mark on the music scene in Asia. Most recently, they snagged the ‘Asia Rising Star Award’ at Thailand’s Digital Awards 2022 and won the coveted ‘Next Generation Global’ award at the 2022 GENIE MUSIC AWARDS (GMA), where they went up against promising new K-Pop artists.

Here's what they had to say about Singapore food and fashion staples (yes, we showed them those FBTs everyone and their neighbour owns), their experience working with Thai rapper SPRITE on their newest single 'Fire', and what goes on behind the scenes of their super-active TikTok account.
Hello PSYCHIC FEVER! Let's jump right into it: What was it like working with SPRITE on your newest track 'FIRE'?
WEESA: Actually, when we were in Japan we used to listen to his songs, so we are so honoured to be able to collaborate with him. Actually, our producer Nino and Sprite have been on the same team, [under the] same label, so that's one of the reasons why we realised this collaboration [could happen]. And he's so cool, but once he's off-stage he's so cute and friendly.

Did you face any challenges from working with different languages during this project?
JIMMY: We had a hard time communicating with our foreign co-workers because we can't speak Thai of course, and SPRITE too, he can't speak English so we had a hard time talking with him. But we [found a way] to run in English, Thai, Chinese, Korean, Malay, so I hope these experiences can help us communicate more easily [in the future].

PSYCHIC FEVER is really active on TikTok – what are some of your favourite challenges or trends you've done?
JIMMY: My favourite trend is the 'Hot Like Fire' challenge, that is the one for our latest single. We hope everyone can join in and that they'll like it too. Ren and I also did the 'Get A Guitar' challenge by RIZE, the Korean boy band, we just shot it yesterday!
TSURUGI: I was the one in charge of the camera!

Who is the most active member on social media, and who doesn't like being on the internet so much?
WEESA: I think it's Ryushin, he really likes social media. Right?
RYUSHIN: Yeah, I like it. I like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, all of it!
TSURUGI: I'm the cameraman, so I just like to [be behind the scenes].

What would you say is the biggest difference about you guys online, as compared to your personalities in real life?
WEESA: If you guys watch our social media, like our artists' photos, you might feel like 'oh, they're a little bit scary'. But as you can see, we're so not scary. And we're always laughing, we're not scary. We're not scary!

Besides watching your dance and TikTok videos, your fans also love your individual styles. Can each member describe their go-to outfit on a casual day?
RYOGA: I like formal fashion, because I like Hedi Slimane (Image Director of Céline).
REN: My favourite are aloha shirts, I love a Japanese brand called Wacko Maria, which carries so many aloha shirts.
RYUSHIN: I like vests and cardigans and flare pants and handwarmers, I just like Y2K.
TSURUGI: My favourite style is American casual, and cowboy style, because my favourite actor Johnny Depp and model David Beckham inspired me.
KOKORO: I always wear denim, 'cause it's so cool.
WEESA: I like bigger sized, loose fitting tops, it's easier to move in them.
JIMMY: I like skater's fashion because I [was influenced by] skater's culture and brands. Especially like Supreme and Stussy, I really love those brands.

What is your impression of the food and fashion in Singapore so far?
JIMMY: On this trip we only had a few days and we didn't have time to go shopping, so I don't think we know too much about Singapore trends and fashion. Next time I really want to go shopping and sightseeing more to find out!
WEESA: But food, I really love Singaporean food, like satay, laksa, chicken rice, and rojak. I love everything!
