On Sunday, the American streaming subscription service announced that the wildly popular South Korean series will be back in an Instagram caption that read: “On your marks. Get set. Green light. Squid Game continues. In a similar vein, director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a letter to fans, “And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming.”

For those who need a quick recap, Squid Game is a fictional drama series where contestants who’re in desperate need of cash play deadly children’s games like ddakji and Red Light, Green Light in order to win money. Main protagonist Seong Gi-hun entered the contest in a bid to escape his situation as a divorced gambler.

In Hwang’s letter, he teased new characters and developments in the upcoming season. He wrote, "The man in the suit with ddakji might be back."

Fans can expect the return of the mysterious salesman who recruits players to join the game show, as well as Cheol-su, the “boyfriend” of the creepy animatronic doll Young-hee featured in the Red Light, Green Light game. Will there be an elevated version of the game with two killer dolls this time? We're waiting with bated breath.

To put things into perspective, Hwang added: “It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

“As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world—thank you for watching and loving our show.”

The first season of Squid Games marked Netflix’s biggest TV show success yet, with 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the first month of its release. According to Hwang, new episodes will likely premiere near the end of 2023 or the start of 2024.

Hwang said: "There's been so much demand, love and attention for a Season Two," he said. "So I feel I have no choice but to make a Season Two."
