Daiso Singapore has officially announced this price hike via a notice pasted on their physical stores, reading “Dear valued customers, thank you for all your continuous support. We always strive to keep prices as affordable as possible. To continue improving the quality of our products, there will be a price change”

“All prices will be exclusive of GST from 1st May 2022. We thank you for your understanding and continued support. Thank you for shopping at Daiso!”

With this tax addition, each item will cost $2.14 as of 1 May. Come 2023 and 2024, when GST will be raised to 8% and 9% respectively, the prices will be further raised to $2.16 and $2.18.

It is highly possible that the $2.14 pricing will be rounded up to $2.15 when paying by cash, so if you’d like to not lose out on that 1 cent, make sure you pay by card instead.

While $0.14 is a negligible amount, people have pointed out that this would be an additional $1.40 if you were to buy 10 items. And in a country where the cost of living just keeps skyrocketing, every little bit adds up.

That said, this is similar to how shopping in Japan works, where even their 100 yen stores charge you an additional 10% in taxes.

It has not been mentioned as to whether Threeppy by Daiso will also be charging GST, but at this point, we wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually do.

For now, perhaps it’s time to stock up on your favourite Daiso products before the price hike kicks in?
