Bespoke jewellery is one way to mark significant life milestones, such as 21st birthdays and engagements. There is a myriad of reasons why people choose to go the bespoke route - one, you get a piece of jewellery that is truly unique. Two, it’s an extra meaningful way to symbolise the relationship between the wearer and the gifter. Plus, isn’t it exciting to create a piece of jewellery that can be passed on to your children or grandchildren as a family heirloom?

Thankfully, you don’t necessarily have to be well-versed in jewellery or design to create the bespoke ring of your dreams. We got Maddy Barber, founder of local jewellery brand MADLY - which specialises in eclectic, custom-made fine jewellery - to clue us in on what you need to have in mind before consulting with a jeweller.

#1 Think about the significance of the jewellery

“A bespoke ring that’s crafted with you and only you in mind, is the epitome of meaning and luxury,” says Maddy, adding that MADLY has seen an increasing number of couples going for bespoke engagement rings.

Most design consults would start with the story behind the piece you want to create - what is it for? Which milestone are you celebrating? What would you want the wearer to think about every time they put it on?

For instance, one of MADLY’s customers got a ring to remember her mother - the design is of an alexandrite cradling a diamond, to symbolise their relationship. Another client customised a bangle in the shape of an X, adorned with spinel, diamond and malaia garnet to remind herself of her X-factor.

#2 Have a budget in mind

When it comes to customised jewellery, the sky’s the limit. To help the jeweller narrow down the options that are suitable for you, let them know your budget. Besides, isn’t this a great way to make sure that you don’t overspend or get surprised by a larger than expected bill at the end? Generally, MADLY’s pieces start from $3,500 while the more elaborate cocktail rings, earrings, bracelets or necklaces featured on their Instagram page start from $6,000.

#3 Completely clueless? Shop around first to get an idea of what you prefer

You don’t have to have an exact design in mind, but it would help if you can let the jeweller know what sort of colours and styles you prefer. In fact, over at MADLY, they encourage you to shop around first.

“Have a look around at a handful of coloured gem jewellers before making MADLY your last stop, because only then would you be able to truly compare the difference between the vast majority of gemstones and the finest 0.1% that we carry,” says Maddy.

#4 Let the jeweller know your timeline

The one major detail that you must know before your first consult? When you need the jewellery by. If it’s for a special occasion, your jeweller needs to make sure that the piece can be made in time.

“Generally, the process takes about 3 months, but it can be more or less, depending on the complexity of the design and how quickly the client falls in love with it. As this is a fluid, collaborative process between the client and jewellery designer, there’s no set timeframe but naturally, we’d do our best to meet the client’s deadline,” Maddy adds.
