Singaporean motion graphic designer Maggie hopped onto the focaccia art bandwagon during the circuit breaker in 2020. Soon after, her family started getting pudgy from indulging in one too many of her focaccia breads, and her friends suggested she sell her bakes instead. That was how her home-based bakery When Mommy Bakes was born.

Every piece of focaccia bread is painstakingly created through lengthy steps. First, the dough is prepped a day in advance and left in the fridge to rest overnight. This is when it will develop its flavour and gluten structure.

After that, decorating the bakes can take anywhere from two hours to three days to complete. Some of the more intricate details like the paper-thin sliced radish used to make rose designs will take two to three days to pickle with natural dyeing agents like beetroot and turmeric.

One of the best-selling designs at When Mommy Bakes is the Bouquet of Roses focaccia bread art. It features a stunning burst of colour with flowers made of fresh herbs and vegetables.
You can also opt for customised designs with a birthday message or well wishes and the birthday girl/boy's favourite character. Some popular requests are Hello Kitty, My Melody and Winnie-the-Pooh.

Perhaps the most impressive focaccia bread art from When Mommy Bakes is the Photo to Focaccia - your photos reimagined as foccacia bread art. The techniques for this unique concept was developed through trial and error and the results are uncanny. All you need to do is provide a photo and its likeness will be replicated on your focaccia bread.

Some BTS fans have even asked for their bias to be on their focaccia bread. You can see Maggie's talent at capturing facial features at work here, where V as a grumpy Snow White and Suga in a ninja outfit are instantly recognisable.

Each loaf of focaccia bread serves six and every order comes with a bottle of homemade garlic confit oil infused with thyme and bay leaves.
Prices start from $40 per loaf for the standard garden-themed focaccia bread. Customised creations start at $60 and depends on the complexity of the design. There is a flat delivery fee of $10 islandwide in Singapore and extra charge of $5 for Sentosa, Jurong Island and Tuas. You can DM Maggie @whenmommybakes on Instagram to place your order.
