Wrinkles are part and parcel of life and it's completely fine to embrace natural ageing. But, there are also some simple ways and habits to adopt to prevent premature wrinkles while you are still young!
A simple search online would tell you that experts recommend starting on anti-ageing skincare products around the age of 25, so if you are way past that age and have not started to care for your skin more, now's the time. If you are still far from 25 (congrats!), it won't hurt to keep these tips in the back of your mind because prevention is better than cure.

#1 Drink lots of water

Let's start off with literally the easiest thing to do in this list! Drinking more water has many benefits and one of them is preventing wrinkles from forming. When your skin is hydrated from inside out, it maintains moisture and elasticity, preventing the skin from sagging and wrinkles from appearing.
Staying adequately hydrated also flushes toxins out from your body, resulting in better skin overall!
#2 Apply sunscreen daily

It's safe to say this is the most important step in any skincare routine and no, you shouldn't only be applying sunscreen when you're at the beach. In fact, you should apply sunscreen daily and even reapply it throughout the day if you can!
Sunscreen protects your skin from UV rays that cause premature ageing (read: wrinkles) and hyperpigmentation. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily! Check out our picks of the best sunscreens in Singapore.
#3 Try to alter your sleeping position

If you usually sleep on your stomach or on your side, you need to try to kick this habit because planting your face into your pillow causes friction on the skin, which results in fine lines and wrinkles.
We know it's hard but try sleeping on your back and keeping your face away from pillows, blankets and your plushies. This also prevents pimples from forming as your bedsheets and soft toys are full of dust and germs, and you wouldn't want all that gunk touching your skin.
#4 Apply eye cream

The skin around our eyes is fragile, thinner and more prone to dryness. The constant movement of our eyes also hastens the appearance of fine lines and it doesn't help that we have to deal with dark circles as well.
So it's important to use an eye cream that combats fine lines and brightens the under eye area. Eye creams also help to hydrate the skin around the eye, letting makeup go on smoother and last longer. Most people start using eye creams in their late 20s but if you see fine lines around your eyes before that, it probably wouldn't do any harm to start using one soon to prevent more from forming.

#5 Reduce your stress level

Stress doesn't only affect your health but also your skin! Stress affects the proteins in your skin and this reduces its elasticity and collagen levels, which results in wrinkles.
Make sure you take time to relax and recharge so as to reduce your stress level and prevent premature wrinkles from forming! Put on a face mask while at it - view our round-up of best face masks for glowing and radiant skin for recommendations.
#6 Stop rubbing your eyes

Rubbing and tugging your eye area stretches the skin and breaks down elastin, which means fine lines and wrinkles will form quicker. Our eye area is extremely delicate and should be handled with care.
Use your ring finger to dab on eye cream and don't tug on your eye area with sponges or your fingers when applying makeup.
#7 Eat food rich in antioxidants

Blueberries, papaya, spinach, pomegranate and many other food and fruits contain antioxidants that will help to combat fine lines. Try incorporating more of such food in your daily diet!
#8 Give yourself a face massage

Massaging your face promotes oxygen and blood flow, and increases collagen production that will prevent wrinkles from forming. Face massages also have other benefits like reducing puffiness and creating a brighter skin tone!
