It is so easy to neglect our skin and body when we are always so preoccupied with our busy lives. We leave the work to products recommended by our friends and mainstream media but do these products work the best for you? Not necessarily so!

The ingredients in your skin and body care products can actually be harmful for you, and even more so for people with sensitive or atopic skin. Here are some harmful ingredients in these products that you should look out for and make an informed decision for yourself. Treat your body right and save your money for products that will actually work for you.

Scroll on to check out what these ingredients are!

#1 Parabens

Parabens are actually a type of preservative that was introduced into skincare products to prevent mould and bacteria from growing too fast and thus increasing the shelf life of the product. Parabens are small enough to penetrate the skin and remain within human tissues, which can cause irritation and other problems, making it a big ingredient no-no! Watch out for ingredients which have "paraben" as part of a word - such as butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben.

#2 Silicon

Silicons are used in many skincare products as they are cheap and make your skin feel smooth and hydrated for a long period of time with its luxurious feel. However, silicon actually clogs up your pores and creates a barrier over your skin for a false sense of hydration. In fact, your skin is probably not hydrated at all and unbreathable at the same time. Overtime, you will feel your skin getting more dull and dehydrated. Avoid ingredients with the suffixes "-cones", "-conols", "-silanes" and "-siloxanes".

#3 Alcohol

Many skincare products use alcohol as they make the product feel "light", aid other ingredients to penetrate your skin, and acts as a preservative. However, using alcohol on your skin will cause dryness, irritations and breakouts by stripping the oils and protective barrier on your skin. If you use alcohol-based skincare products regularly, you will find your skin irritated and dull after a while so you should avoid using such products, especially for dry, sensitive skin, or rosacea. Alcohol usually has the suffixes "-yl" and "-ol" so keep a lookout for that.

#4 Colourant

Although a brightly-coloured product is much more appealing to the eyes, they are just not for skincare products! Using products with colourants exposes your skin to more allergens, making it more susceptible to irritation and allergies. Synthetic colours are even worse as they can be contaminated with heavy metals in the process of making these colours. So, the best product is one that is naturally coloured! Watch out for terms with colours such as "yellow", "blue" or "green" or serial numbers such as "CI42090" (Green).
