Once you have chosen a colour you like, it's time to go into the hair dyeing process proper. Here's what you will need:

  • Hair Dye Box (1 box for short to shoulder length hair, 2 boxes for long/thick hair)
  • A pair of gloves
  • Old clothes / something to protect your clothes from staining (We usually just cut a hole in a sheet of newspaper to put our head in)
  • Lotion
  • Mirror

Most hair dye boxes will already come with some of the things you need such as gloves and clothes protection so make sure you use them! The hair dyes introduced in this article are all bubble dyes, making it much easier for you to do it for yourself. However, you can get a friend to help you with the dyeing process if you are not confident in doing it yourself!

Step #1: Prep the hair dye

Usually, there are steps to how you should prep your dyes and they are pretty simple like combining the products labelled "1" together and pour "2" inside "1". Look closely at the product manual because they usually have pictures there that you can follow!

Make sure that you don't shake the product vigorously but slowly swirl from side to side. To check that the dye is mixed properly, squeeze out a small lump of foam and make sure that the colour is even.

Step #2: Apply lotion along your hairline

This is a pro-tip from us! Apply lotion or balm along your hairline and you won't have to worry about the dye running down your face or staining your hairline.

Step #3: Apply on your hair

You don't want to just plop everything on your hair! Section off your hair and apply the foam in sections, moving from your roots to the ends of your hair. Make sure that you squeeze the foam on your hand first and not directly on your head! Ensure all your hair is covered with foam by checking on the progress in the mirror.

Wait for at least 45 minutes to let the dye sit in. Wash the dye off with shampoo, condition your hair and voila, new hair colour!
