Eateries in Singapore are all trying to one-up each other to top the “Insta-worthy” list, and we’re totally here for it. This year alone, we’ve seen the opening of a book cafe with Beauty and the Beast vibes, a restaurant with hot pot in glamping-style tents, and Singapore’s first upside-down cafe, full of topsy-turvy photo opportunities.

Recently, we’ve also been blessed with Soul Coffee; With panoramic wall projections, a glowing moon swing, tarot readings, and horoscope coffee, it’s probably the most mesmerising coffee house you’ll find in our Little Red Dot for a long time to come.

Being located at Kinex, which isn’t the most accessible, Soul Coffee is not one of those cafes that you’re likely to randomly walk past and discover - unless you’re someone living in the area. So despite its mystical allure, it’s still relatively unknown. For now.

The entryway with botanical decor and optical fibre lights dangling softly from the ceiling is merely a prelude to the magic that you’ll find inside. There’s also a glowing moon swing here, which, needless to say, is a popular photo spot.

Step in and you’ll be greeted with panoramic projections with scenes of nature spread across the cafe’s walls. This will be the backdrop of your coffee session, and animations will change themes every hour or so. Most popular are the cherry blossom and sea aquarium scenes, the latter of which will make you feel as though you’re dining underwater.

According to my colleague who visited the cafe, these dreamy naturescapes are manually changed, with a staff member clicking on a file to do so, so it does kill the illusion a little. That said, it takes just a minute or so, so it’s but a small detail that can be overlooked.

The food menu here is lean, mostly consisting of light bites. If you’re someone with a small appetite, the Cheesy Omelette Croissant with Fries and Honey Baked Ham Croissant with Fries ($13.80 each) should suffice for a meal. Or get some greens in your system with the Tofu Salad or Avocado Salad ($9.80 each), both served with Sesame Sauce.

If you’re good with just a snack, go for the Buffalo Wings or Tulip Wings ($9.80 each) with fries.

There are also desserts like cakes, ranging between $6.90 to $7.90. My colleague tried the Peach Mousse Cake and Apple Mousse Cake, pictured above. Although these were gorgeously crafted, they didn’t leave much of an impression on her taste-wise, and according to her, canned fruits were used instead of fresh ones.

Being a coffee spot and all, Soul Coffee’s specialty lies in their drinks, particularly the iced Signature Horoscope Coffee ($9.90), which each concoction inspired by the zodiac.

Interestingly, their coffee is brewed with the help of a cute barista robot, which makes use of smart AI technology to get the job done.

There are also Signature Horoscope Mocktails ($8.90), each with their own look and “personality” to match the corresponding star signs.

Well-concealed thanks to the wall projections are two doors leading to separate rooms specially for tarot readings and crystal aura readings.

My first question to my colleague was: Is this legit?

Well, the cafe was founded by the local esteemed feng shui grandmaster Hillary Phang, so the person doing your readings is supposedly trained in the practice. In any case, whether you believe in such readings or not, it’s still something fun to try if you don’t mind the slight splurge.

The tarot card readings (from $68) allow you to ask one specific question about your life. The aura crystal readings (from $38) are a general 3-month forecast of your life, where you’ll pick out gems from a little bag and place them in different positions on a chakra chart to your liking and have them interpreted.

All readings are inclusive of a complimentary cake and drink!

Overall, my colleague felt that the food and drinks at Soul Coffee looked a lot better than they tasted, so don’t let that be your main motive if you’re thinking of heading down. After all, the mystical vibes, photo spots, and psychic readings are what make this establishment unique, and those immersive elements are what make it worth the visit.
