After visiting a few themed selfie studios in Singapore, they all start to look curiously similar, with a somewhat Taobao-ish aesthetic - lovely but a little repetitive. Cue a new premium selfie studio that aims to provide a more elevated experience: Parallel Egos Studios.

The studio and its name was inspired by the desire to indulge in different versions of oneself in a parallel world.

Located about a 10-minute walk from Upper Thomson MRT Station, Parallel Egos Studios is a fairly small selfie studio. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in quality and originality.

They provide a range of unique clothes, shoes and accessories that don't look like typical mass produced buys. Customers are welcome to wear anything they like for their photoshoot.

The studio will also provide basic makeup and hairstyling services, and customers can opt to top up a fee for a more elaborate makeover.

And while the studio is admittedly a little compact, its owners have managed to squeeze in six artfully styled themed zones.

If Only Flowers Can Grow

I zoned in straight for this dreamy themed zone where the studio owners' originality and creativity really shines through.

This wedding photoshoot-worthy corner is decorated with dried flowers including a handmade floral arrangement. The centrepiece is a hanging swing chair draped with tulle.

After We Kiss

Next is a grungy themed area with a charming worn out look. It was designed to resemble cool underground bars in New York and it did capture that alternative, cool girl aesthetic.

Think exposed light bulbs, brick walls, neon lights and rock 'n' roll posters.

Wabi-Sabi Unwound

This cottagecore-meets-wabi-sabi corner has quite the origin story. The studio owners were inspired by the 'leftover women' term where women over the age of 30 are criticised for their decision not to marry. This themed area offers a pat on the back to such women, likening their life choice to the beauty of wabi sabi.

China 1906

Next is a retro Chinese themed room made to resemble the glamorous era in China at the start of the 20th century. The room is furnished with vintage-inspired furniture, gorgeous floral wallpaper and old-timey objects that reflect the mix of traditional Chinese elements and Western influences in the 1900s.

Slip on one of the retro dresses with Mandarin collars, apply a faded filter and you'll look the part of a tai tai in 1906 China.

No One Is Watching

This artist's atelier-inspired area looked straight out of an indie film set. It features replicas of Ancient Greek statues, original artwork hand painted by one of the owners, paintbrushes and other curiosities.

W for Wild

The studio also has a unique outdoor selfie area including a campfire zone and a Moroccan-inspired glamping tent.

There are fans on site which are a welcome relief from the afternoon heat.

You can also do a little shopping at the mini retail area that has press-on nails and accessories on sale.

Although I was skeptical of the high price point (up to $52/hour for 1 person), the studio proved itself worthy of their premium positioning. Everything from the lighting equipment to props and clothes were of much higher quality than other selfie studios I've visited. The themed areas were also well-curated and included many handmade elements and artistic touches. The floral and artist's atelier themed rooms, in particular, were a step up from traditional selfie studio backdrops and somewhat reminiscent of art installations.

From 23 January to 23 February, Parallel Egos Studios is having a 1-for-1 CNY promotion, excluding their 1-hour sessions. For every session (2 or more hours) purchased for one customer, the second customers gets a session for free for the same duration.

Standard hourly prices range from $30/pax for a 4-hour session in a group of four. If you're going in a pair, it'll usually cost $88 per person for a 2-hour session. With the promotion, you can purchase the $88 2-hour session for one and bring your Insta-boyfriend/friend along for free. That works out to be $44 each for two hours or $22/hour per person - quite a steal!

Each session gives customers access to the entire studio, although you may be sharing the studio with other customers. Two rooms will be completely revamped with a new theme every three months so customers have a reason to revisit.
