Ariana Grande and SNL star Pete Davidson just called their whirlwind romance quits over the weekend, a month after the 25-year-old's ex Mac Miller passed on. He was found dead at 26 after an overdose.

According to TMZ, Ariana and SNL star Pete Davidson broke up over the weekend and both agreed that it was not the right time for their relationship to take off, ending their 2-months engagement.

Though both of them have yet to comment on their breakup, a source close to Ariana told People that their relationship was "too much too soon" and that "it's not shocking to anyone."

"Given the events of the past couple of years, Ariana is going to take some much needed time to heal and mend. She will be staying close to home and using this period to spend time with her loved ones and work on new music without deadline."

Ariana and Pete first moved into their $16 million New York City apartment in June after they announced their engagement. Later, they also adopted Piggy Smalls, an "emotional support piglet" that appeared in breathin', her latest music video.

In an emotional post dedicated to Mac, Ariana wrote:

I adored you from the day I met you when I was nineteen and I always will. I can't believe you aren't here anymore. I really can't wrap my head around it. We talked about this. So many times. I'm so mad, I'm so sad I don’t know what to do. You were my dearest friend. For so long. Above anything else. I'm so sorry I couldn't fix or take your pain away. I really wanted to. The kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved. I hope you’re okay now. Rest.

Mac and Ariana became Instagram-official in September 2016 after collaborating on the two hit songs The Way and My Favourite Part.

He also supported and comforted her after the terrorist attack during her concert in Manchester, killing 22 concert attendees. Though she was not physically harmed, she was left with PTSD. When Ariana touched down in the states to return home, Mac was there at the airport to welcome her home. He also cancelled a few festival shows to be by Ariana's side after the attack.

Breaking up in May 2018

Ariana confirmed their breakup but remained friends. In an Instagram post, she also shared: "This is one of my best friends in the whole world and favourite people on the planet. I respect and adore him endlessly and am grateful to have him in my life in any form, at all times regardless of how our relationship changes or what the universe holds for each of us!"

Shortly after the breakup, Mac was involved in a DUI incident and hit-and-run accident after crashing his Mercedes G-Wagon. It was during this period when news started publicising Ariana's new relationship with Pete.

Many fans didn't take the news well and one fan even tried to blame Ariana for what happened to Mac.

"How absurd that you minimise female self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship because he wrote an album about them, which btw isn’t the case (just Cinderella is ab me),"

"I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be. I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety and prayed for his balance for years (and always will of course) but shaming/blaming women for a man's inability to keep his shit together is a very major problem. Let's please stop doing that."

Ariana and Mac have loved and supported each other for a long time and it's no doubt that he means a lot to her. Though she was engaged to Pete Davidson, we can't be sure if she Mac was still in her heart at that point in time.

Only time can heal all wounds. Let's pray for Ariana and hope that both she and Pete Davidson can find the closure they both need with time and love.

RIP Mac Miller. You were gone too soon.
