The festival has many legends associated with it. It is said that King Hiranyakashyap's sister Holika had a boon that fire couldn't burn her. The king asked his sister to enter the fire with his son Prahlad. Lord Vishnu saved him and Holika was burned alive. The festival is the symbol of victory of good over evil.
