Every Millennial Who Wants To Be Successful Should Learn From Our Ah Gong, Mr.Lee Kuan Yew
Millennials think a lot about changing the world. Too much superhero movies perhaps. "I want to work from home and travel around the world!", "I want to be a famous blogger/vlogger!","If there's a shortcut, I'll take it! We have noble dreams, visions and ambitions. What does it take to realise them?
Oh dear... Why the stereotype..?
Very often, it sounds right when people tell us to dream big, think big! Is that what it really takes to be successful? On the other hand, have we allowed the 'big' word to swell up our ego and give us unrealistic expectations? When we do well it's all good but when we don't, sometimes we feel like a failure and this habitual cycle is unhealthy. You are worthy, you are honoured, you are talented at certain things despite your failures! Keep trying & don't label yourself!
Millennials are a generation of talented, creative and educated people. In this rat race of brilliant people chasing success, who will make it as a winner of life having the character, success, health and good morals?
Remember that the small things in life matter. Break 'the big goal' down into small measurable tasks. Small victories will naturally lead you into the bigger picture and eventually the big success.
Ah Gong will teach us!
1. Discipline Starts Today
- Form Good Habits & Keep Trying (eg. Wake up early, journal, exercise twice a week)
- Don't Procrastinate Small Stuff (Rule of thumb, if you can complete it in 1 minute, do it now!)
- Cutaway Distractions Unless Its Rest Time (Social media? Games? Events?)
2. Make The Best Of What You Have
When we compare with our peers, we make ourselves vulnerable. We end up thinking bad about ourselves or on the other spectrum, become too proud. You need to make a sound evaluation of yourself. Recognise your worth and be the best version of yourself.

- Identify Your Strengths (Write it down & remind yourself)
- Identify Your Weaknesses (Write it down, ask your friends for feedback and work on it)
- Don't Envy Others But Be Faithful With What You Have
3. Emotional Stability
Ah Gong's view of Chinese President Xi Jinping: “I would put him in Nelson Mandela's class of persons. A person with enormous emotional stability who does not allow his personal misfortunes or sufferings to affect his judgement. In other words, he is impressive.” TIME Nov 19, 2007
- Be Determined On Set Goals
- Mental Clarity Over Popularity
- A Balanced Judgement (It takes tremendous self-control and pauses before speaking)
If you have emotional stability, ah gong calls you impressive.
The goal here is for millennials to be open to the good values of being down-to-earth, focused, confident and stable. Think about running a marathon instead of a sprint in life.
