Just like how there are common hair care mistakes, skincare mistakes and even workout mistakes, there are also common makeup mistakes that ladies make on a daily basis unknowingly.

But it's never too late to find out what they are and stop doing them now to improve the look and longevity of your makeup.

Read on to find out more!

#1 Not applying moisturiser before makeup

Makeup doesn't sit well on dry skin as it will accentuate any flakiness and uneven texture. Remember to apply moisturiser before makeup every day, even if you have oily skin! Another misconception is that oily skin doesn't require additional hydration but that's not true at all. When oily skin is adequately hydrated, it prevents the skin from overproducing sebum, which will in turn help your makeup last longer.

Check out our list of the best moisturisers in Singapore suited for each and every skin type and concern.

#2 Using the same shade of concealer for your entire face

Concealer for dark circles should be a shade or two lighter than your natural skin tone but you shouldn't be using that one concealer for your entire face. To get a flawless canvas, try using a colour corrector that has different colours to cancel out any skin redness and hyperpigmentation.

#3 Applying makeup in the wrong lighting

Natural light is the best condition to apply makeup in because it accurately reflects your face, letting you put on makeup with ease. You won't have to worry about going too harsh or too light on your makeup when applying it in natural light. On cloudy days, LED lights are your next best bet as they create lighting closer to daylight.

#4 Going overboard with your eyebrows

The rule of thumb when it comes to eyebrows is to make sure they are slightly lighter than your hair colour. Start with small and light strokes when filling them in to prevent going overboard. Getting the right eyebrow shape is extremely important too! Make sure to use an eyebrow mascara after filling in your brows to make them stay in place for as long as possible.

#5 Too much bronzer

Bronzers are great at giving you a sun-kissed glow but too much will result in an unnatural and harsh look! We recommend choosing matte bronzers (without shimmers for a natural look) no more than two shades darker than your skin tone. Remember that a little goes a long way with bronzers and make sure you use the right brush, preferably an angled brush, for better precision. Applying bronzer according to your face shape will help to bring your best features forward.

#6 Applying blusher only on the apples of your cheeks

Long gone are those days where ladies used to only apply blusher on the apples of their cheeks as this could result in an unnatural and clown-like look. One of the most universal ways of applying blusher is by starting on your cheeks and sweeping upwards following the contour of your cheekbones.

#7 Highlighting the wrong areas

Highlighting certain areas of your face will help to lift your features for a flattering look. But highlighting the wrong areas can also make you look like a greaseball, which nobody wants. The right areas to highlight are: cheekbones, brow bone, chin, nose bridge, middle portion of the forehead and inner corners of the eyes. Remember to be light-handed when applying to avoid looking oily.

#8 Using the same brush for different eyeshadow colours

We know it's easier said than done to clean your brush after dipping it in one eyeshadow shade. It's simply too much of a chore and nobody has time for that! However, using the same brush for different eyeshadow colours can actually mess up your eye makeup look. We recommend using a colour removal sponge which you can purchase online or use a different brush every time you use a different eyeshadow shade.

#9 Using lip liner only on the outline of your lips

Outlining your lips with lip liner is a great way to prevent lipstick from bleeding or to create a fuller lip look. But it's going to look weird when your lipstick fades and you are left with that outer line exposed. Remember to fill in your lips with the liner too before applying lipstick to prevent that from happening!

#10 Not setting your makeup

The dewy, glass skin look is what's trending but not setting your makeup with a bit of powder might do more harm than good. Your base makeup like foundation and concealer may smudge and slide throughout the day when your skin produces sebum and when your face touches the mask. Make sure you dust on a little setting powder on areas such as your t-zone and chin as these are the areas that produce the most sebum. This step is vital in letting your makeup last all day long.
