7 Rules To Follow When Organising Your Home So That It Stays Organised
Have you ever cleaned up the mess in your home and set up an organisation system only to have it revert back to its messy state shortly after?
That means your organisation method isn't working out for you in the long term. There are a few organisational rules that will help make it easy for you to keep your home organised all the time.
Keep reading to check out the seven rules to follow when you're organising your home!
#1 Cut down on the number of things you have

Do you really need 10 varying shades of milk tea lipsticks or 20 phone cases? Probably not!
It's much easier to keep organised when you have less things so give away things you don't need and try not to bring too many new things home.
#2 Store the most used things close to you

Oftentimes, our most used things end up as visual clutter on surfaces because why put them away when we need to reach for them again soon? When organising your things, plan storage space for the things that you use the most close to where you use it.
For example, your most used stationery can be stored on your desk while less used ones are kept in drawers. In the kitchen, your most used cookware can be hung up above the stove while less used ones are stored in the cabinets.
Try Muji's acrylic cases that come in a wide variety of sizes and designs for keeping your desk surface organised.
#3 Label your storage boxes or drawers

Clutter accumulates when you don't know where items belong, so they just pile up in random spots. This will happen even with an organisational system in place if you don't know what goes in which box or drawer.
You'll be familiar with what's inside every storage unit right after you finish organising your home, but a few weeks or months later and you might start to forget. Other members of your household need to be familiar with your organisation system too or you'll be picking up after them.
The simplest way to identify what every box or drawer contains is to label it! The IKEA MANICK Box with lid ($24.90) comes with a label holder that makes it easy to relabel the box when you repurpose it.
#4 Or make them transparent

An alternative to labelling is to use transparent storage units. You'll be able to identify which drawer or box to reach for at a glance. Try the Glass storage box ($36 - $123.75) from Shopee for small items like makeup and accessories and the Magic buckle transparent stacking box ($6.47) for larger items.

#5 Make sure you can access everything easily

Things that are well organised but difficult to access won't be utilised as much if it's a hassle to get. What's more, items that are difficult to place back where they belong are likely to end up in a random junk pile.
To avoid going back to a disorganised mess or forgetting what you have, make sure everything can be accessed easily. For example, instead of placing items in a deep shelf where the ones in the back are difficult to access, use a rack shelf so that you can stack them vertically. This makes every item easy to reach for and place back. Try this kitchen sink organiser ($11.90 - $12.90) from Shopee.
You can also organise items on trays as it's easy to pull out the entire tray to access the things at the back of a shelf.
#6 Sort your items into as many sub categories as possible

The more specific your organisation is, the easier it will be to find what you need and place it back.
You can spot what you need in a drawer with items organised in many sub categories in a second while you'll have to rummage around a drawer that has all kinds of stationery randomly placed together.
This IKEA KUGGIS Insert ($15) has 8 compartments to keep all your small items well organised in a drawer. You can also use even smaller containers to store tiny items like paper clips and safety pins.
#7 Have a miscellaneous tray or drawer

There are certain random items that you may not automatically know where to place like letters, hand sanitisers, glasses and earphones.
Leaving them strewn across tabletops can make your home look messy, so have a designated miscellaneous drawer to store them. For smaller items, you can use a box or tray like the Muji Wooden Tray ($7.90). Make sure to clear it out regularly and not let the pile grow bigger.
