Netizens call this new lid at Starbucks the 'Adult Sippy Cup Lids' and claim that it is better for the environment. Is it really so..?
Y’all this summer please ask for a cold brew lid with your iced drinks from @Starbucks!!! Straws are super bad for the ocean and the environment and this is an easy switch to make!!! Think of the sea turtles!! pic.twitter.com/Wxcfjjaqbr

It is not new to us Asians, because we have CHEESE MILK TEA. The reason for this semi-opened lid is for you to drink half-half. You tilt the cup at an angle so you taste both the cream and tea without mixing it up. The maximum pleasure in a cup.

For this reason, we ditched the straws; For the sipping experience and not fully because it is environmentally friendly, (or maybe). And that is why Starbucks offers an alternative lid for its Nitro brew in the States. You drink to enjoy the foam that tops off the Nitro drinks.

With this lid, you don't need a straw! True that, and besides you can request for this sippy lid on any cold drinks without extra charge! (P.S When Starbucks start charging for whipped cream on non-frappe drinks, I nearly drop my loyalty) Please don't charge extra if this should hit our shore!

Comparing Left and Right, do you think 'Sippy Cup Lid'(on the right) saves more on the plastics?
Some netizens fight back the 'environmental-friendly' stigma by pointing out that, "it takes more plastics to make a lid than a straw!"
Yes, while it may take more plastics to produce a lid than a straw. Since both drinks require a lid anyway, to do away with the straw is a step forward in integrating a more environmentally friendly practice. Not only because of the amount of plastics used in making the lids, but also in reducing the actual physical product- straws. From documentaries, a straw or a piece of plastic in the ocean makes a big difference. So one less plastic item per cup of coffee. What a difference it makes, accumulated around the world!
Which is really the lesser of the two evils? We say, stick your own tumbler and get the $0.50 off. We are excited for this lid to land in Singapore and hope that big chain stores like Starbucks start to be more environmentally conscious! Little efforts go a long way.
