Disney magic. I felt it for the first time thanks to Disney's Beauty and the Beast. This live stage musical has arrived in Singapore, playing from now till 25 January 2026 at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.

It's produced by Disney Theatrical Group under the direction of Andrew Flatt and Anne Quart and presented in Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia under the direction of Chantal Prudhomme.

TL;DR: this was a near-perfect musical, a visually stunning marvel and a total blast (and it's not even my favourite Disney film). Just as a scene left me in awe, the next topped it, and it kept taking things to the next level. You'll get the best experience with all the surprises intact, so here's a spoiler-free review for a teensy look at what to expect!

Stunning Sets & Costumes

From the very moment the curtain rises, it's clear that Disney's Beauty and the Beast will bring the drama and the visuals.

The set designers pulled out all the stops to create what might be one of the most beautiful productions yet. Every set piece is hyper detailed to bring the setting to life. Some even have unexpected interactive elements, and others are mixed with technology to make the stage appear even grander and more expansive. There are also gorgeous baroque-inspired moving pieces that really make the castle feel enchanted.

And there's the costume design! My eyes were spoilt for choice at who to look at, and my wardrobe wish list was expanding with every new character that popped onto stage. The castle gang - Lumière, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Babette, and Madame - were dressed to the nines in red-carpet-worthy costumes that perfectly encapsulated their animated film counterparts.

Meanwhile, the ensemble cast also had a covetable wardrobe with a mix of glamorous suits and dresses in the castle along with cottagecore outfits in the village scenes. Of course, Belle's iconic yellow dress lived up to (high) expectations, and her reveal even gathered gasps from the audience on gala night.

Another part that doesn't disappoint is the Beast's transformation scene, which I still can't figure out how they managed to pull off!

Infectious Music & Dance Numbers

What the audience anticipates most are the four beloved musical numbers: Belle, Gaston, Be Our Guest, and Beauty and the Beast. The production team knows this well, as they went all out for the former three. Riveting dance choreography, incredible vocals, props, light effects, turntables, backdrops, energy at 100% - they delivered it all with gusto. Meanwhile, Jayde Westaby, as Mrs Potts, performed the title song with great care, capturing the warmth and comfort of the original Angela Lansbury version.

The musical also included some new songs, which matched the rest of the musical well but otherwise were rather lacklustre.

A Stellar Cast

Disney really struck gold with this ensemble cast. They were outstanding, particularly in Gaston and Be Our Guest, leaving the audience staring, mouth agape, before fiercely applauding from the sheer adrenaline that infected us.

Minor characters that weren't particularly memorable in the original film, like the three ladies swooning over Gaston, were such a delight to watch on stage. All these side characters enlivened the environment, so much so that one watch isn't nearly enough to appreciate it all.

This musical also nailed the humour. The actors delivered the punchlines in a way that made them feel new and fresh even though we've heard them, probably over and over, since childhood. There are also some new jokes to look forward to and the Beast even got to do some physical comedy.

Speaking of the Beast, expect a declawed and, dare I say, cute-sified version of this supposedly hideous Prince. Firstly, he's not hideous at all! Besides some little horns and hairy hands, he looks like a regular gym bro. His beastly nature is also toned down. He's played more like a grouchy teenage boy, with the occasional 'beast mode' turned on with help from the sound department. Brendan Xavier, who does a wonderful job at this role, is of a similar stature to the actors playing the candlestick and the clock, so he appears almost adorable as he teeters about the stage. Perhaps it's for the best as it makes it even easier to root for his romance with Belle.

Shubshri Kandiah, our Belle, moves, emotes, and sings like a real-life Disney princess, while Jackson Head's Gaston is so hilariously gross, you can't help but marvel at his ridiculous antics. Playing off the latter is Adam Di Martino's Le Fou, who seems more like a fully fleshed-out person that you almost feel sorry for him.

The stars of the show, however, are the enchanted castle staff, namely Rohan Browne as Lumière, Gareth Jacobs as Cogsworth, Jayde Westaby as Mrs Potts, Hayley Martin as Babette, and Alana Tranter as Madame. This fabulous bunch has big personalities and the actors seem to have so much fun with it. They also have superb chemistry and lots of good banter. They made these characters so endearing, which made for a bigger emotional reaction once they returned to their human form.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast was so impressive, it just might have turned me into a 'Disney adult'. Bring your kids, your partner, your friends who love the film, and even those who aren't mega fans. They're all guaranteed to have an enchanting time.
