Freaky Friday is based on a 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers. It tells the story of a mother and daughter who switch bodies after eating a magical Chinese fortune cookie. In the 2003 film adaptation, Lindsay and Jamie played the roles of the mother and daughter, while Mark Harmon portrayed Curtis' character's fiancé.

The 2003 film was the third adaptation of the novel. Previous adaptations include a 1976 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, and a 1995 television movie with Shelly Long and Gaby Hoffmann.
