Netflix's Damsel Starring Millie Bobby Brown Is Not Your Typical Fairytale Film
While many fairytales typically end with the prince and princess happily riding off into the sunset, evil defeated and love conquering all, Netflix's Damsel takes a different route.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown sets out on an adventure that completely redefines the traditional fairytale narrative. As Elodie, she's not the damsel in distress waiting for her knight in shining armour. Instead, her story takes a darker turn when her prince betrays her to a dragon. With no one to rely on but herself, Elodie must summon her courage and determination to navigate this treacherous new world. It's a tale of survival and empowerment as Elodie forges her own path to freedom.

Although Millie Bobby Brown's character starts off terrified and dressed in a gown inside the dragon's lair, she quickly realises she must adapt to survive. This means ditching the fancy attire for something more practical and arming herself with a sword. From what we've seen in the trailer for Damsel, it seems like she's ready to unleash her killer instinct. Could she shift from being the prey to becoming the predator? It's very possible. We hope she forms an unlikely alliance with the dragon and turns the tables on those who betrayed her. That would certainly be an exciting twist.

“She’s a damsel who doesn’t need to be saved,” Brown told Netflix. “She saves herself in many ways. It subverts what you expect: You’re expecting the prince to turn around and save her, and… no. Don’t wait for the prince.”
The star-studded cast includes Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Brooke Carter, and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Oh, and a dragon. Check out the official trailer below:
The film is set to premiere on Netflix on March 8, 2024.
