When one Instagram-worthy exhibit in Singapore ends, another one begins - this seems to be the never-ending cycle of art installations these days, and we can't say we're not loving every bit of it. Although Light To Night Festival 2022 and the pastel rainbow neon structure in the East have ended their runs, there’s more to look forward to with a futuristic new exhibition at the National Gallery Singapore, full of colourful photo-worthy moments. And now's the best time to visit since they're currently having a 1-for-1 ticket promotion over a limited period of time this month!

It’s hard to describe Nam June Paik: The Future Is Now in a single sentence; Simply calling it an “art installation” doesn’t do it justice, for this multi medium exhibition features video sculptures, fast-paced light projections, and a flurry of colour and sound to fully engage the senses.

The South Korean artist’s exhibition has toured prestigious museums such as the SFMOMA in San Francisco and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others. We Lion City dwellers are hella lucky, for this is the last leg of its tour - and its only stop in Southeast Asia.

Arguably the biggest highlight of the exhibition is a video installation titled “Sistine Chapel” - a highly-acclaimed piece that stole the limelight at the Venice Biennale. Interestingly, this installation was first created in 1993 - using technology that was way ahead of its time - and remade earlier on in 2021 with a modern update.

Be prepared for a multisensory “buffet” of sorts, with audio reverberating across the room interspersed with periods of intermittent silence. As this goes on, a series of vibrant projections will be cast onto the four walls of the room, keeping you enthralled every second.

While there, you can try getting creative with your own shadow art as the various hues of the rainbow dance all around you.

While impressive on its own, “Sistine Chapel” is only but a facet of Nam June Paik: The Future Is Now. Other creations to check out include an endearing robot made from old electronics like DVD players, a flickering candle in a TV set meant to inspire meditation, and interactive elements that allow you to play with sound.

Amidst all the photo-taking for Instagram, pause for a while to read the descriptions of each station to find out more about the artist’s thought process - you'll be surprised by what you might discover.
