Crazy cat lady who loves afternoon tea, kawaii Japanese fashion, and all things Sanrio.

They’ve wowed audiences worldwide, in places like France, Spain, UK, and Brazil, and finally, the highly-anticipated Candlelight Concerts have finally found their way to Singapore. After a successful run in 2021, these concerts have continued on throughout 2022, with a whole new line-up of themes, as well as some new performers.

Be mesmerised as you’re serenaded by skilled classical musicians playing their tunes - popular movie soundtracks included - on pianos and string instruments as you bask in the glow of hundreds of candles.

Candlelight Concerts are just as their name suggests - instead of sitting in a concert hall with dimmed lights as per the usual experience, these venues are illuminated with the mesmerising radiance of candles.

We’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of candles scattered across the entire surface of the performance stage, as well as on the theatre’s pillars, aisles, and even the grand piano that the musician of the night will be playing on.

Some of you might be wondering: Is it going to be safe? What happens if a candle gets tipped over by accident? Won’t the dripping candle wax damage the floors? And isn’t Singapore already warm enough?

Well, to address your concerns, the candles used are all electric LED ones - which means they’re flameless. This ensures utmost safety for both the performers and the audience, and you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you won’t be sweating buckets as the show goes on. So don’t worry, go on and suit up or don your favourite evening gown for the occasion!

Performances will be held across various heritage halls in Singapore, including the beautiful CHIJMES, Victoria Theatre, and The Arts House. There are even a couple of shows happening at the S.E.A. Aquarium this time, so you’ll get to admire marine creatures swimming about in the background while your ears get a treat.

All musicians part of the line up are local talents, including solo pianists Gabriel Hoe and Churen Li, as well as the four-piece Vocalise String Quartet, among many others. Performers will vary depending on the music theme you choose.

We’re most excited for the Magical Movie Soundtracks show, which promises an enchanting night full of riveting classics from well-loved franchises like Disney and Studio Ghibli - all expertly played on the piano. Some specific titles out of the many include “I See The Light” from Tangled, “One Summer’s Day” from Spirited Away, and “Hedwig's Theme” from Harry Potter.

Another one for the movie buffs is the Best of Hanz Zimmer edition. Even if the German composer’s name doesn’t ring a bell, you’re sure to recognise his many Hollywood hit soundtracks from the likes of Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, and various superhero movies like Batman Begins. These high-octane tunes will be played by a string quartet - just imagine all the theatrical crescendos, further amped up by the dramatic candle-lit ambience!

Those who have an ear for classical music can be charmed by the lilting tunes of great composers like Chopin and Vivaldi.

Else, you can opt for Taylor Swift’s Best Hits, or tributes to other popular singers and artistes like Jay Chou, Adele, Coldplay, The Beatles, and BTS. Ther’es even A Tribute to Queen played on string instruments. Yes, you read that right - we’re talking about Queen the rock band.
