In a time where travelling for leisure has been indefinitely halted, it may seem like the world is more divided than ever. But Japanese creative agency NAKED, INC refuses to believe that, and has come up with an interactive cross-border art project to help connect the world despite current challenges.

Titled Dandelion, this new free-entry exhibition at Gardens by the Bay will allow you to “blow” flower petals to Japan in real-time, while concurrently receiving sakura blossoms from them. It will only be around for a limited period of time till 15 November 2020, so make sure you drop by soon!

The brainchild of Japanese artist Ryotaro Muramatsu, Dandelion by NAKED, INC makes use of cleverly-mapped light projections to form beautiful interactive floral patterns that dance across the lawn of the Supertree Grove.

You’ll first have to scan a QR code on your smartphone, before pointing it at the giant dandelion standing in the middle of the field to "blow" its petals. Dandelion fluff will scatter around on the ground in ethereal swirls before being transported to various installation locations in Japan and taking root to bloom as peonies.

At the same time, the dandelion fluff and seeds from Japan that settle in Singapore will bloom as pretty pink sakura - a welcome sight to those who’ve missed travelling during the cherry blossom season this year.

All this will be happening in real-time, caused by real people - so it’s akin to interacting with a stranger across countries. Fittingly, the seeds and floral patterns are meant to be a symbol of peace and solidarity between nations as we fight this pandemic together.

Do note that a maximum of 5 people will be allowed to approach the installation at any one time, so you might have to be prepared to queue if you’re visiting during a peak period.
