Mooncakes come in all sorts of designs and flavours these days, from bubble tea to galaxy and even My Melody-themed. Snowskin and baked crust aside, there are also thousand layer mooncakes, which are traditional in themselves - but we found a baker in Singapore who makes modern character-themed ones featuring Little Twin Stars, unicorns, and more.

Koala Tea Break is a home baker who is based in both Singapore and Canada, and it’s just our luck that she happens to be here in our sunny island during this Mooncake Festival season.

Putting a cute, modern twist on the traditional thousand layer mooncake, she has come up with her very own Thousand Layer Character Mooncakes, featuring a swirly rainbow-coloured base adorned with handcrafted short-crust pineapple cakes made to look like various cartoon favourites.

Despite the unconventional appearance of these flaky mooncakes, your folks will be glad to know that the fillings aren’t too crazy, with your choice of either black sesame paste or red bean paste.

These Thousand Layer Character Mooncakes are being sold for $10 a piece, or $35 for 4 ($8.75 each). Top up $2 per mooncake for a salted egg yolk centre.

As these Thousand Layer Character Mooncakes are made fresh in small batches, you’ll have to make your orders at least 3 days in advance. Free pick-ups can be made at Lorong Chuan MRT station, while delivery fees vary based on location. Make an order of at least $80 to get free delivery.
