It's hard to shine when there are so many blockbusters (thanks Marvel and Star Wars) competing for number one in theatres but Adrift proves otherwise.

Our homegirl Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin (Me Before You, Hunger Games) fight for their lives while drifting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after they were hit by one the worst hurricanes in recorded history.

BASED ON A TRUE STORY :(

[Spoiler Alert!] We're about to dive deep into the movie Adrift so if you haven't seen it and don't want to be spoiled, stay away! :P

Before we go on to Shailene's performance, can we just talk about Sam Claflin? It's important.

Sam Claflin (Finnick in Hunger Games or Will from Me Before You) is one of our favourite Englishman, ever, and he never disappoints.

His acting was stellar but we can't help but relate his character to his role in Me Before You, where he acted as Will, an active young man who became paralysed waist down after an unfortunate accident.

In Adrift, some terrible things happened to Sam Claflin's character Richard Sharp when he got thrown overboard. His ribs ruptured and broke his legs and Tami Odin (Shailene Woodley) had to take care of him.

With each other for support, the two of them (mainly Tami actually, since Richard was immobile) slowly pulled the ship together and started sailing thousands of miles in search of land.

Shailene's acting really brought the character to life and it really made me think: what if I was in her position? Will I be able to do what she did?

It really puts your mind to the ultimate test.

Earlier on in Adrift, Tami and Richard ate for the first time together in Mayaluga, the ship he built by hand and has sailed miles with.

In this scene Richard learned that Tami is vegetarian but that night changed both of their lives as they decided to go on an adventure together.

Food supplies were limited and in order to survive, Tami needs food. She was left with no choice but to go down under and fish for food. This was mentally excruciating for a vegetarian and in the movie, we see Shailene Woodley feasting on the marine life she fought hard to lug back.

That scene got us. We wouldn't do that... Urgh life :( Poor Tami.

Based On A True Story

Adrift is based on the true life story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp (both pictured above).

Tami Oldham was 23 when she met her 34-year-old British fiancé, Richard Sharp. Richard had been pleasure sailing his 36-foot sailboat, the Mayaluga, six months before he met Tami. They made the decision to accept a job delivering a 44-foot yacht, the Hazana, from Tahiti to San Diego (Tami's hometown) where it would be received by a new owner.

Hurricane Raymond hit just when they were a little under three weeks into their 4,000-mile trip.

Adrift is now showing in theatres. If you're looking for a fresh show to watch, this is it! No regrets.
