‘Moana’ Live-Action Trailer: Catherine Laga’aia Stars In Disney's Epic Ocean Adventure, Dwayne Johnson Returns As Maui
Make way because Disney just dropped the first trailer for the live-action Moana. Catherine Lagaʻaia steps into the role of Moana, while Dwayne Johnson reprise his role as Maui, the loud and lovable demigod who joins her on a journey to save her home and her people.

Auliʻi Cravalho voiced Moana in the 2016 animated film, but the live-action version introduces Lagaʻaia as the new face of the adventurous teen. The film also brings in John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.

The animated film was created by John Musker and Ron Clements, with Jared Bush writing and Mark Mancina, Lin Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foaʻi creating the music. For the live action film, Bush teams up with Dana Ledoux Miller on the script, while Thomas Kail directs. The producing team includes Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn. Mancina also returns to lead the music and Miranda joins as a producer.
Disney first announced the project in April 2023 and it is sailing into cinemas on 9 July 2026. The turnaround is quick, especially since the animated Moana has not even hit its ten year mark yet.
Disney also has other classics in the works. The studio recently restarted work on a new Tangled after a short pause. Snow White struggled at the box office earlier this year, but the live action Lilo and Stitch became a huge summer hit. Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King also did well when it arrived late last year.
