New Hello Kitty Hotel Designed To Look Like A Traditional Japanese Teahouse Now Open In Kyoto
With its traditional townhouses, zen gardens, and geisha culture, Kyoto is known for being steeped in tradition. Thus, unlike Tokyo, it isn’t really the sort of place you’d go to for quirky experiences, and saying you’re there for Sanrio-themed experiences might raise some eyebrows. But one hotel there has combined modern kawaii elements with cultural ones, with their adorable Hello Kitty hotel rooms inspired by traditional Japanese teahouses.

Resi Stay is a boutique hotel chain of sorts with multiple branches within Kyoto, offering affordable and comfortable stays that are reasonably spacious. Putting a spin on the regular hotel stay, Resi Stay The Kyoto, located an easy 13-minute walk from Kyoto Station, has just launched their brand new Hello Kitty-themed room with ryokan vibes.

While there are modern beds instead of tatami mattresses, you’ll still find classic elements such as sakura-patterned bedding and faux marumado windows, given a touch of cuteness with Hello Kitty designs. The main one behind the bed frame also “opens up” to reveal a kimono-clad Hello Kitty relaxing with Japanese sweets in a zen garden!

The parasols on the wall and patterned paper accents on the ceiling are another charming touch!

Those who are interested in Japan’s tea culture will delight in the adorable furnishing, namely a matcha coffee table and cushioned seats that look like dango and flower-shaped wagashi. Accompanying you during teatime is a painting of Hello Kitty on the wall!

The bathroom is themed as well, with a Hello Kitty-shaped mirror and sakura wallpaper. There’s even a washing machine so you can do a quick round of laundry and have fresh clothes to re-wear for the rest of your trip.

As part of the experience, patrons will receive free Hello Kitty merchandise: A mask with pouch, hand sanitiser, and an exclusive tote bag.

Prices are surprisingly affordable, despite this being a themed experience. This particular room costs JPY12,350, with a mandatory cleaning fee of JPY6,200, which works out to JPY18,550 (~S$207.92) in total. Divide that among the maximum number of 4 guests, and you’ll each be paying less than $52 per night. That said, even if you’re here as a couple, you won’t be blowing your pockets either.
