I thought I knew my hair condition pretty well at this point - it’s dry and damaged from years of bleaching, so I mainly use moisturising shampoos and swapped out conditioners for nourishing hair masks and oils. I also avoid washing daily, partly to prevent my locks from drying out further and partly because washing and drying my thick, mid-back length hair is a time-consuming affair.
Upon hearing that I only wash on alternate days and that I often leave wet hair to air-dry, my consultant immediately asked, “Do you find that the top of your scalp has been itching more lately?”
I was shocked by how accurate her deduction was and sheepishly nodded. She then examined my hair follicles under a microscopic camera, and to no one’s surprise, there was a build-up of dead skin cells - even though I had made sure to give my scalp a good scrub during my shampoo sessions.

Turns out, some things that I thought I knew about my hair were all wrong. While I do have coarse and thick hair, she pointed out some hair follicles that are growing fewer and finer strands of hair. That’s because the dead skin cells can clog up the hair follicles, impeding healthy hair growth.
To drive home the point, she warned that I might have to deal with hair loss later if I don’t start exfoliating my scalp - something that has never occurred to me due to how thick my hair currently is.

She also observed that the top of my scalp looks slightly red and said that could be the result of excess humidity, which irritates the scalp. Our weather is already pretty humid to begin with, and leaving my hair to air-dry adds to that moist environment which can encourage more dandruff and even fungal growth (yikes!).

Based on my scalp analysis, these were her three recommendations:
- To double-cleanse my scalp and hair every day. First with a deep-cleansing shampoo like ADV Nutrition ($48) to help prevent the accumulation of dead skin cells and impurities, followed by a correcting shampoo that deals with a specific concern - such as my dry, damaged hair.
- To blow-dry my scalp after every hair wash to get rid of excess humidity.
- To go for scalp and hair treatments, just like how we’d go for facials to help with skin woes.
The result
I started washing and drying my hair almost daily, and to my complete surprise, it didn’t dry out my hair like I thought it would. In fact, my hair felt smoother and more manageable from the extra TLC. And the PHS HAIRSCIENCE consultant was right - I desperately needed to double-cleanse my hair.
The recommended products to deal with my hair woes are the ADV Elixir ($238), a weekly exfoliating serum for the scalp and the shampoos from PHS HAIRSCIENCE’s range, which is designed for a thorough double-cleanse without stripping the hair and scalp of their necessary natural oils.
After a week of following the consultant’s advice, my embarrassing dandruff issue became less noticeable and I’m sure that over time, I won’t have to deal with this issue anymore.
